Excited about what I hope to be an awesome hunt in the morning, however, the property I will be hunting is pretty remote, and the stand I will be hunting is a pretty good haul from the truck. I'm not saying I'm scared but I will admit I do not jump for joy at the thought of walking through the woods in the dark alone. Does anyone else have the same feeling? The guys up north should have a field day with this, being born and raised in Kentucky I have absolutely nothing to worry about, but half a mile in your mind starts to make stuff up and it's a great feeling when you finally get sat down in your stand 20ft off the ground is all I'm saying haha Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Haha I understand completely! Try walking through a cemetery when it's pitch black to your blind! You don't even get to get off the ground.
I totally get it! The thing that gets me is making noise walking when everything else out there hears and sees way better than you do!
The first part getting strapped into your climbing stand platform and the fact you are hooked to it makes you feel helpless/uneasy sometimes. After the first 10 feet I’m good to go. Does anyone else feel this way?
The spot I’m working right now is about a mile from the truck. I do use a headlamp, until I get close, then I switch it to a red light mode. The feeling is nerve-racking, but at the same time, exhilarating. It’s tough to explain, but when you see that low level fog in the woods that’s about at Chest level, it’s really kind of cool, but creepy at the same time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’m usually pretty good till I hear coyotes start yelling!!! Then I get my pistol in hand!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I honestly don't like walking out after dark, mornings don't bother me so much, although I will admit the woods got me on my morning sit this saturday I was walking into my spot and and just gotten to the base of my tree, as I was tying my bow to the lift rope I heard something moving through the underbrush about 30 yards to my right. My first thought was "Oh great, I am going to get busted by some stupid doe" when I heard a high pitched bleat. Looking back on it, I realized it sounded just like that primos "doe in heat" can call. But my first thought was black bear cub. We have alot of black bears around here and I was not going to be stuck on ground level with a momma bear. I raced up that ladder faster then an ice cream truck driving through ethopia!
It turned out to be a doe fawn I think, she bedded down about 60 yards away and then came back an hour later.
I don’t worry about walking in and out in the dark... but once I’m up in the stand or blind and I hear things close by and around me I do get a bit nervous lol. Just Saturday I was up in the stand about 40mins before legal light and I heard something coming from behind me across the stream and under my stand....I knew it wasn’t a Deer and we have a lot of fox, raccoon and wild cats on the lease... so I shined my light at the bottom of the tree and low and behold it was a huge raccoon lol. Funny thing is he just stopped in his tracks once the light was on him. Lol. A good friend of mine had a raccoon climb his tree several seasons ago and was real aggressive as well... so I get a bit concerned over them lol
I have a CCP and if going into areas that I don't know very well, my 380 is strapped to my right leg so I can reach it at the top of my boot. In Iowa a hunter cannot carry a hand gun while hunting, except coon and trapping, without a CCP. Now a big bunch of shotgun deer hunters got the CCP so they can run the roads with their guns loaded. Scary ! A bunch of arm chair "hunters" on the loose with loaded guns in the vehicles.
Haha I specifically said I wasn't scared, just that i don't enjoy it especially being in remote areas with stand locations a mile plus from the truck. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Only gun that is ever loaded in my vehicle is my side arm... but it is nice knowing if I for some reason screw up and leave a round in one, I’m covered with my CCP. Wonder if hat covers us on an Uncased bow? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Iowa hasen't got that bad yet. Don't have to have bows cased, no restrictions on "loaded" or not but give them time.
Might want to recheck the regs man. Bows have to be cased or inoperable. Actually it’s Illinois they needs it.. I was wrong. I travel to Illinois so much with my bow I keep it in a case...lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
