We have a piece of family land here in southern louisiana and last year we started hunting on it and seen quite a few deer and a couple of nice sets of horns, even harvested a few, and pretty much saw movement any time out, but here is the problem we also run cattle on the property during the winter which doesn't seem to affect the deer movement have a couple of cameras out and seeing plenty of deer this year. I have been putting corn out and also planted a little food plot but with it coming up the cattle are starting to get into and have a feast.

Have any of you ever put up a electric fence around a food plot, or what is some of your thoughts on this? I have seen several deer effortlessly hop over a barb wire fence about 4 1/2ft. tall but didnt know how a hot wire would effect them about 2 1/2 or 3 ft. off the ground

Any thoughts on this is much appreciated.

    Thanks

i saw a video on youtube about something similiar, what they did was put up a fenced area around their food plot then as the season came closer they opened up a corner of the fence to let the deer in, maybe you could so something to that effect? only issue is i know how cattle are and if they can or sometimes even if they cant fit the will get into places they arent supposed to! good luck

A buddy of mine used to just barb wire off his food plot - fairly simple/cheap 3 strand config to keep the cattle out. The deer clear the fence with ease.

Saw a show on the outdoor channel, forget the name but they set up an electric fence to keep the deer out! Then they opened one side of it before hunting it. I forget how long it was before opening day but they mentioned they wanted the deer to feed on it and make it part of their feeding routine.

A friend of mine used to put a fence up around his food plot to keep his horse out of it until closer to the opening of the season.

Yup......... barbed wire around the plot.. No need to open it, deer jump over taller things all day long and don't even think about it.. They will hop over it when they want in..

i agree with barbed wire. It keeps cows in farmers pastures so i dont see why it wouldnt keep them out of your plot.

Thanks for the input. I will go with barbed wire next year. I was just thinking hot wire cause I got the stuff to do it and I could have it up in a couple hrs and get outta there, still may do it anyways just to see what happens. Will post results of how it works if I do.

barbed wire or electric fence would be just fine. I have a friend who uses a single strand of electric fence to keep the cows out, and the deer figure it out just fine and hop over it to enjoy their feast. Shame to let that plot go to the cows!
