The positives of stoping a deer for a clear non moving shot almost always out way the negatives. An extra jumpy deer that an arrow go high over is much better then a Broadhead though the guts and 12 hour wait while they suffer in a bed and die. Watch deer moving unmolested though a wood, they are stopping to listen and observe all the time. For most shots you have two choices, first and best option is to wait till they stop on their own if they are just milling around its good bet that they stop. Or secondly if they are steady moving though... a soft whistle or grunt followed up but a solid placed low aimed arrow will serve you well. The further the shot the more the above holds true, a walking deer at 15 yards may place you arrow say 4 inches back...the same deer moving at 30 yards it will be double..8 inches and a much poorer shot. I disagree in that "I" prefer to shoot at a walking deer inside 25 or so yards over one that I had to stop with a bahh, with a bow. There are times when the cover dictates I must stop them but if it is in an open area, I shoot without stopping. Never had an issue out to 34 yards, cant say the same for deer I had to stop. Most don't know how to correctly do this so for them, stopping may be the best option. Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2
Before the video age we set up to be close for sure shots, I have yet to have to "stop" a deer in order to shoot it, I simply set up where deer are comfortable and shoot them when they are stopped. You will find that by limiting your shots to inside 30 yards at un alerted deer your success will sky rocket and misses and wounding will become a thing of the past. You are young, learn to "hunt" smarter.
Wait your 14 and shooting 300fps?? Can we hear your setup? Bow, draw length, poundage, arrow weight? My guess is your shooting way way under 300 fps.
Apparently you didn't read a dang thing I typed before this post! I also never said anything about shooting a moving deer!! Read and understand before quoting and commenting please! At 40yd and you whistle or whatever, theme they hear an arrow zinging through the woods and of course they are going to react. Do this at 20yd and that arrow hits in half the time. Shooting 300 or heck 220fps and the chance of a jump is way less likely especially of the bow is quiet! Should he shoot a deer walking at 40? Hell NO! And I didn't say that at all!! If I led him to believe he should by not BOLDLY stating DO NOT SHOOT a moving deer, may I apologize.
Not saying you can't do it at all but, that's impressive and I would like to see video of this! That would be really impressive! Oh an deer aren't tennis balls.
Should I shoot at under 40 yards? I spot and stalk a lot with my dad so it is hard to get shots closer than 30
Talk about jumping the sting. I disagree with something as simple as what you stated and you go on a rant, really talk about being a little too over sensitive and thin skinned. In any event from all the comments the original post drew, the poster should have come away with about every reason and solution for the string jumping...I guess it up to him to and take away what he needs to know and implement it.
Actually, you seamed to take something I didn't say and pretty much made it sound as if I were telling him to shoot at deer walking though the woods. By the "and their done"statement was referring to you have alerted them and at a distance of 40yd they are hearing that arrow and have time to react. They will be much more likely to hear it and jump it. Anyways, he should be fine now if he listens to the advise.
Really? I hope you were joking but, if not, I have known guys who have old beat up looking equipment that knew their equipment and had it tuned perfectly killing deer left and right. They also never took a shot outside 20yd. If you know your equipment and it's limits and are able to get within those limits, you can kill with the equipment you have.
Yeah, with that setup you are NOT shooting 300fps. Why am I starting to get the feeling that this is just yet another troll on the website?
