What exactly did the current players and coaches do again? Oh yeah, that's right, nothing. Why should they be punished?
Because that's what the NCAA does - what did Matt Barkley with USC do to deserve not being able to play in bowl games the last 2 years, or most of the Ohio State players banned for a year from bowl games - absolutely nothing... Sometimes they can punish individuals only but often times they punish entire programs... Imagine if all violators just had to make it through 'their time' with a university and there was no chance of any consequences to anyone - would be even a bigger mess than it is now...
I do. In fact, I'm a single parent with sole custody of my children; ages 11 & 12. What does that have to do with anything? Also, I know a thing or two about the justice system, including when, where and how it applies. If the charges have all been filed, the "house" has been cleaned and the current staff & kids had no role or knowledge of the crimes, why drag out the drama? Why punish those whom had absolutely nothing to with this entire controversy?
The dude (Sandusky) was a criminal, hiding behind a completely legitimate activity (football). There are Sanduskys everywhere. Should we shut down our schools because a nut gets a teaching job? Should we close down the military because a training instructor turns out to be a perv? You have got to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water here. Sandusy's activities had nothing to do with football any more than a training instructor's misconduct had anything to do with military training. There are just nuts who need to hung by their... well... use your imagination. Yes take down the idol for every man made idol in this world will lead you off course anyway. That's why we aren't supposed to have any in the first place (2nd commandment). My family had planned to see Batman while at a swim meet at UT this weekend. We considered not going after the events in Aurora but in the end, we decided that to not go to the movie and not to allow our son to enjoy time with his friends would be playing right into the hands of people like Sandusky or further empowering those who choose to turn their heads when they see things that no one should see. The current players and coaches are part of the university. The university will be punished, and the players and coaches are just a by-product of that. Its happened many times in NCAA sports. Fair or not, thats how its played.
Personally I think it was a little too lenient, but I will acknowledge it was still pretty harsh. "punishing the current players for past crimes" isn't a valid excuse. Life isn't fair and people get hosed daily. The kids are allowed to transfer, and really aren't they there for an education anyways?
So now that the NCAA has set this new authority for themselves, when are they going to punish Arkansas for hiring his mistress and getting into an accident while drunk on his motorcycle? I mean there was criminal activity, misuse of state funds and attempted cover up.
If you compare the severity of that crime versus the crimes at PSU, then Arkansas should lose 1/2 scholarship for 1 week.
As a hardcore Penn State fan I'm comfortable with the sanctions put in place by NCAA this morning. Something had to be done, and at least they didn't crush the program entirely. They now have 4 years to heal, rebuild the program, and settle in with a new coaching staff. We have no where to go but up. We will also see/find the real fans and supporters as we move forward. Something had to be done though, as buckeye said you can't put sanctions on tOSU and not PSU......anyone that believes nothing should have happened is losing sight of reality IMHO.
I think they got it right, Joe Pa is just lucky they did have email back 70's and 80's. Yes it's a criminal case, but the crimes were allowed to happen when someone knew because of the culture of the football program at the school. NCAA to schools. Football is not greater than law
