Ive been looking for a new job for months now and havent had any look. I have a BA in Marketing but live in a blue collar area. I have only heard back from probably 25% of the companies i applied with and have followed up with sending a hard copy of my resume, cover letter, letters of recommendation and a copy of my degree. what do you guys suggest i do to follow up even further to try and stand out to these companies. My biggest objection to overcome is my age. Im only 24 and have 2 years of professional management/ marketing experience. That 2 years i have is a worth more than what it looks like on paper since i have been thrown to the wolves right off the bat and was successful. I try to discuss that in my cover letter but im not sure that they are seeing the value. Do you suggest calling? if so, how often? Email? threaten them at gun point?

Yes, Call them back. Also, put your resume up on Monster or one of the others. Make sure it's clean and up to date. I've had a lot of luck with these sites. Carrerbuilder is the other one.

If at all possible visit personally to drop off your resume and application. It is always good to have them connect a face with a resume when they are looking at it. Plus if you get to visit with the HR or hiring person its like having an impromptu interview. Also good to follow up with a call to ask if there is any other information they might like from you. It keeps you on their mind as they are in the hiring precess.

Network as much as you can as well. Right or wrong, most times it is who you know or who knows you that gets you a job.

    Good luck.

If you're unwilling to move, that could be your biggest problem.

Secondly, did you have a professional or someone good look at your resume? Maybe it's not written like it should be and doesnt express the points youre trying to convey

This is a great point. Reading through your post you have a punctuation and capitalization problem. Not trying to be a nob or anything but I look at resume's and if they aren't correct I move right along. Attention to detail is key.

In addition to the suggestions above, if you aren't looking at relocating:
*Find somebody to help make introductions to local business leaders
*Network through civic organizations, non-profits or other events
*If travel is an option contact some consulting companies/contracting companies

I have had this resume look through by multiple business professionals before. Yes my punctuation, grammar, capitalization arent correct on here because i know its a forum. Im confident that my resume and cover letter are well written and they have been looked at by multiple professionals. I simply think its a matter of age and length of experience. I have been told by a number of employers that how i present myself and carry myself as a professional dont match my age. I know my location is killing me but i have a feeling my wife isnt going to make a change unless we seriously needed it and we arent in that situation... YET.

What part of northern Wisconsin are you from?

Have you looked into any work from home jobs? That way where you live would not matter. You could expand your search to anywhere in the nation.

Well if your resume is good, but you're being held back due to your experience and age (which I don't doubt), then you're going to have to move. If your wife isn't there yet, well I guess when you're scraping by on mustard sandwiches she will listen. Except by then, because you've been out of a job so long, you may be discriminated because of that.

My opinion, act now, or face the consequences later.

I never really trusted these positions. I feel they are mostly freelance positions that have 0 guarantee of profitability?

I do have a job now, but it was created specifically for me by the president of my company as an experience building position to help my resume and help the company with some projects simultaneously. The pay just SUCKS. Yes, a marketing executive position has helped my resume, but with all my student loans, mortgage, bills etc.. its hard to save anything. Wausau is only 45 mins away and I know theirs opportunity there... there has to be.

Well, if you have a job in the meantime and you don't want to move. Make connections (join local clubs, chapters, groups, etc) and meet people. Doesn't have to be hunting, could be volunteering to help bolster your resume and make connections too. Other than that, you're just going to have to tough it out with your sucky pay until someone near you returns a phone call or you meet the right people.

There is opportunity everywhere, making connections makes it easier to get them.

I'm sorry I think I kind of drifted away from your original question, other than joining local clubs as stated by others, I can't think of much. I do know from watchign someone hire someone for a coaching position, the star applicant had a whole playbook filled with plays that he would coach the players on, training schedules, etc, just like he had the job.

Im not too familiar with marketing so I don't know if that is possible. Also just watched Wall Street Money never sleeps with Shia Lebouf or whatever. He got the CEOs attention by manipulating stock price, I wouldn't advocate doing or doing anything illegal for that matter, but doing something bold and public could be a way to get someone's attention. Ive read many stories on yahoo with people who did stuff like that, someone had a sign up on the wall street movement that said she had 15 years exp and such and she got hired, other people hack into the companies (for those who want IT or anti hacker jobs) to show them they can do the job.

If you have just a standard resume and only 24 with 2 years experience, there isn't much that makes you stand out from older more experienced applicants who im sure you're going up against. Add some flair to that resume as vague as that sounds.

You know, people laugh at me for this, but I want to live among the homeless for a month or so. Just to get a perspective or idea on how they live, the way they think, or why they do things they do. Just always been a social experiment ive wanted to do, doing something like that and PROPERLY conveying it on your resume may make you stick out and look more interesting. I had to hire someone before and I first looked for the technical skills I needed (the pool you fall into) but then also looked at experience and any other extracurricular things. Think college again, what makes you valuable, what kind of fresh perspectives can you bring into the company, how will you get the company money?

This is really good advice. I have a connection with a woman who owns her own small marketing firm. Shes a one woman band and isnt looking to expand but she is very good at what she does. I will have to give her a call and brainstorm some "out there" ideas on how to market myself. I know shes good at marketing companies but i think she would see this as a nice challenge.

    Thanks chopayne

Though it would be more hours away from home. You could intern for her unpaid or low pay. Could get you shoe ins with the companies she markets for if they're looking for a full time associate.
