Their judgement is usually clouded by their arrogance. Chances are, they have gotten away with it before, and they think they will again. The more they get away with it, the more arrogant they become. Then they start to slip up and eventually get caught. Assuming these allegations are true, I would bet Brett still thinks he can get his way out of this. His first tactic appears to be the "I just won't talk about it and people will forget it happened." After that doesn't work, the next step is to vehemently deny the allegations. The more you can use that southern charm to do so, the better. If that fails, discrediting the source/victim is always a good move to fall back on.
