MADISON - Governor Scott Walker has reversed the promotion of a campaign contributor’s son to a top job in the state Commerce Department. Spokesman Cullen Werwie said yesterday that Brian Deschane will return to his old job in the state’s regulation-and-licensing agency.

The demotion came a day after the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that Deschane was hired over some highly-qualified candidates – even though he has very little management experience and no college degree. Walker’s administration tabbed Deschane to head a Commerce division to oversee environmental-and-regulatory issues, while supervising dozens of employees. His father, Jerry Deschane, is a long-time lobbyist with the Wisconsin Builders Association – which gave $29,000 to the governor’s campaign a year ago. And the group’s members also funneled $92,000 to Walker through a conduit over the last two years.

Brian Deschane was supposed to make over $81,000 in his new job. But the demotion cuts his pay to his previous amount of $65,000 Werwie said a replacement for the Commerce division job would be named soon. Assembly Democrats were livid once the news of the promotion got out. They wanted to eliminate Deschane’s job altogether, something Majority Republicans rejected. Minority Leader Peter Barca called it “cronyism.”

This is what is so screwed up with election fundraising. This is common practice no matter if its this guy, or a democrat in MD.

I was discussing this with a democratic fundraiser in MD, who happens to frequent HNI all the time in the politics section. I asked him where does all this money come from. I know I have never gave the first penny to a politician to get elected. It all can't come from regular citizens. He told me it doesn't,it almost always is funneled thru companies, highway contractors. I ask why they would give these huge sums. And he said, its to get contracts. And if the elected official doesn't come thru with these contracts, they won't see any more money next go away.

Folks, this is insane. Campaign reform has to come.

I could not agree more, I do find this Ironic that Walker who complained about high paying state jobs, is giving them back as perks to who he owes:)

Why do you find it ironic? Its politics. Somebody gives you something, they generally want a return on thier investment. Every state does it.

What I find ironic is not too many citizens know how this all works, or acts like they care. Citizens just like playing politics every elections cycles.

Who said anything about being neutral? I just was pointing some facts and my opinon.

If it was not for Walker the guy would have one easily. Do you doubt that?

All politics aside, the real issue is that the state only has $xx,xxx, xxx money to utilize, and the current system they have will over extend them $x,xxx, xxx (just use the X's for whatever number you need, same deal is going on here in Ohio). The governor is trying to figure a way to balance out the budget, he's not ASSAULTING the state employees, and they are FREE to go find a job elsewhere. Unfortunately, part of the problem that never, EVER, EVER will get cut is the part that DESPERATELY needs cut....WELFARE!!! Ask Chris (Mudshark) about the Pennsylvania state situation a couple years ago.... State employees pay got CUT OFF completely while the state had a budget crisis, but the people on Welfare kept receiving their checks!!!

In Ohio, one of the things that many of the UNION people are against is retention based on performance rather than seniority!!! What's so wrong with that??? Sometimes people become complacent in their "Job Security," and quit doing a good job, if this is in our schools, police and fire departments, or hospitals, then we NEED the BEST efforts of these people a kid's future or person's well-being depends upon it.

In a perfect world I agree with performance based retention, our world is far from perfect;)

In a state with 5.6 million people at best both sides could get was a combined 1.5 million votes, pathetic to say the least.

If they're not WI residents, how are they eligible to vote? Am I missing something?

So, you're saying you're perfectly content with people keeping their jobs based solely on seniority even if they are not productive?

That's fairly typical though in most states.

$81K? That's a little over 20% of what you make though, Gary. Do you paint on the side?

You're about as "neutral" as Chris Matthews.
