I feel like such a doofus. I let a piebald 8 pointer walk this morning. Now, I regret it. :bash: He came trailing a doe and presented me with a 17 yard quartering away shot. I only had a few seconds to make the decision and I made the wrong one. He's not a "brilliant" piebald but he does have some nice characteristics. He has a big circular patch of white in front of his left hind quarter with a few white patches other places. Also, all of his legs are solid white from the knee down. I'd say he would have scored 105-110." I DID want to pass on the rack but didn't realize he was piebald until the doe came back in sight with him following. I think he might be this doe's daddy. I would like to take her as well. Maybe next time.

Here's some crappy pics of a spike that made his way to my stand this morning (11.4.08)Hopefully, you guys can see the BIG white spot on his left side. This is the prettiest piebald I've seen so far. Wonder how many more I will see.

If you gotta think about it, don't shoot. Yeah, a piebald is cool and all.....but if the rack is below your standards, you made the right decision, IMO. You would have been disappointed either way in this case.

Jeff, good point. I would have really felt bad about that.

I guess you're right Don. I was thinking about that this morning. Usually, when I see a buck...I know if he's a shooter immediately. We'll see what happens if I get presented with another chance. Thanks

I think you made the right decision. Even thought they are rare, it would be better if he had a bigger rack.

will pie-balds and albinos get as big as a "normal" whitetail??? (all circumstances the same)...thought that was a sign of bad genetics

Nah they will all be the same size, they only suffer from a lack of pigment. Their only downfall is they stick out like a sore thumb, except during winter!

Im not sure actually. Its not like they are an endangered species or anything, they arent even a different species. Maybe because the lawmakers are a bunch of snobs who think they are "pretty" or something? Lol

Another thing to consider when deciding to take a piebald is "can I afford a full body mount". It would be a shame to just mount the head.

I thought about that Andy. Depending on the deer...I might just get the hide tanned.

Man there's no way I could have let him walk!
Good luck if you see him again and decide to shoot!
