Now that Dave has effectively made all future DIY posts here on BH.com unworthy, I still thought I would share a little side project I finished up today. Since this is our first year actually planting a garden and some blueberry bushes, my wife got the bright idea that we should have a rain barrel watering system. So, I started digging, and doing a little research on what my options were. I decided on a two barrel setup with separate fill spigots. Eventually this will be run into a drip irrigation system for the garden and blueberry bushes the main line runs by, but for now it's just a hose running to the garden and then a soaker hose in the garden.

I scored the barrels for free from Pepsi, and the stand was built from PT lumber left over from another job. Aside from the plumbing, and the hardware, I don't have much in it. I purchased a diverter that will allow me to keep my main spouting intact and will divert the water back through it once the barrels are full (hopefully). I also added two unions to allow the barrels to be removed if necessary.

Excuse the sub par photos, I took them all quickly with my cell (even though the S4 is supposed to have a stellar camera :D ). Also, please forgive the ugly wall and area around it. This is my main project area for the summer (furring the wall out and siding, mulching, and new retaining wall).

    All mocked up:

3/4" Threaded coupling screws right into the existing holes in these barrels. All you have to do is drill it out and teflon tape the threads.

    Plumbing is completely concealed:

All in and ready to rock (again forgive the crappiness that is my house, hopefully that will be all better by the end of the summer)

Thanks fellas. It's not the prettiest, but my wife likes it, so I'm happy:D I filled it manually with a hose a little bit (about 10 gallons), and it's working great (plus no leaks which is a plus). We didn't get any rain today like they were forecasting so I didn't get to see how the diverter works.
