My wife, step son and her brothers went to Myrtle beach Southh Carolina on Monday and came back Wed. On the way back something caught my eye on the side of the road. There was an entrance that looked like an entrance to a ranch with the tipicle logs around the entrance but, instead of bull's horns attached there were buck sculls with pretty nice sized racks. For a second I thought " Nice, there is a hunter that lives there". I quickly realized the fences are really high. As I noticed that I saw an elaborate feeder set up, an elivated box stand within 30yd of the feeder and then it hit me. This is a ranch but, not for cattle. It was what I hate the most in the white tail world. Hunting in a cage. The fence ran along the mane highway for a close to a mile or so and as we rode past I saw more box stands, feeders, what appeared to be small fruit orchards, small patches of woods and well manacured small pastures. I literally became sick to my stomac to see this. I just thought I would share with everyone.
I understand your displeasure. But it is legal and their prerogative. Really, instead of slitting the animals throat at a slaughter house they are shooting it from a box. Definitely not my cup of tea but I don't think it's anything to get yourself worked up about. One thing for sure is that it's not hunting.
I didn't get worked up just sick to my stomac. It was just the feeling that came over me when I realized what it was. I understand it is leagal and all I just wouldn't do it nor do I believe it is right. Just my opinion.
Next time, ignore that thought. I'm kidding...sort of. Whitetail ranches are legal. The deer are purchased or raised on site. They are not taking wild whitetails and inserted them into these ranches. If people want to pay, and happily shoot one of them, great. Its called a ranch for a reason. They are ranching whitetails. Well, now you got me. I am a curious person. Its both an asset and a curse. Exactly what makes you sick to your stomach about a whitetail ranch? This is what happens when I venture out of the basement, ie the water cooler.
While not very sporting, ranches are perfectly legal. The deer can't be entered into the record books, so no harm there. Not much different than fishing in a pond, is it?
I'd never hunt in one but I don't have a problem with people who do. It's their choice. I wouldn't want them caring how I go about my business so there's no reason for me to care about how they do.
No problems with it as long as it is legal. Its not something I would personally do but if that is how someone chooses to kill a deer then more power to them.
I couldn't hunt any of those places if they paid me, no interest at all. All 100% fair chase, no high fences for me!
I'm pretty sure that would be the opinion of almost every member here. No one is debating that. The question is, does it make you sick to your stomach? Do you get queasy? Would you have to pullover if you drove past one out of fear that you might vomit, and once recovered from said illness, would you drive home and start a thread about this topic and near-vomit experience? That is the subject here.
Hey stick, I know how you feel and what you mean. Here it what I have to say about high fence farms. If a disabled person can go out to the real woods and hunt with help there is no excuse for a high fence period. Personally I think they are for the guy that are to busy to be a real outdoorsman. They just want to go in in the morning shot something and go home that day. It's like a flippin trout farm fishing in a 20' wide pond. It's not for me and never will be and I appreciate your conviction on the matter.
apparently I worded something incorrectly or something. So if I may clarify a few things or at least try. So I am going to try. I don't think it is wrong as in it should not be legal or I look down on people that do it or would do it. I just don't think it is right as in I wouldn't do it. I was just stating how I felt when I saw it. Its hard to explain but, I had the same feeling the other day when I watched a dog catcher catch a pit bull that I know and I know has no history of violence or any attacks on anyone. I knew he was going to be put down due to an officer telling me he would be. He was just off his leash because it was old and broke. It may have just been that I don't yet understand much about these ranches such as I didn't know that deer were raised in captivity just for this reason. I really was just stating how I felt when I saw it. I wasn't trying to cause any controversy.
I am sure as hell glad I read this one right after I read the the last one you posted. I would have taken it seriously. That kind of happens when there are no "lol" or some sort of smiley face or something to let a new guy that doesn't know you or your manor-isms or humor. Just to clarify something for you. I said it made me sick to my stomach. Not almost have to pull over and freakin vomit. There is a difference there. I guess you do spend a lot of time in th ewater cooler huh? lol
