For several months it has been calling.....and calling....and calling. Only problem is once I start something I just don't go weekend warrior, I get obsessed. Please someone help me forget it!
Ah yes, I remember all too well myself... What started out as Taekwondo for me quickly lost it's lackluster and I migrated (backthen) to PKA kickboxing. My theory was I didn't want to stop 1" from someone's face anymore... I was fortunate (or not so fortunate) to have spar with two legends at a place in Manchester, NH called Murphy's Kick-boxing 30-years ago... 2nd ranked in the world Midweight David Beckman (If I recall his name correctly?) Super Bantam world champion Steve "the stickman" Delany. (more my size & again remebering his name?) Now it's a mixture of MMA & things hurt way too much to play that rough anymore at 45!!! But it does get the blood pumping...
For me it was Kung Fu.. Once the black belt came, and weapons were introduced I lost interest. I can't use weapons on the streets and if I did, that's a whole nother charge... I chose to walk away from weapons.
Something like that will take a lot of time. Time training and competing and, to do well or excel at it, a lot of time. That is time you will have to take from something else, your family, scouting, hunting, your family. Think about the time it will take and then about how much "extra" time you have right now. Decide then.
Brett, it is pretty funny the things you and I have in common over the years. From high school to college, to getting back in great shape after the career and babies came. I have been back in the gym religiously for the last year or so, and I am finally starting to look as I once did. I went to a local "knuckle up" establishment with a buddy a few weeks ago just to see what was up. After rolling around on the mat a few times and "sparring"......man the competitive juices cranked up and I wanted to hit/be hit. We all know it is alot more fun to hit, but all that time, patience, practice etc is just not there for me anymore. I really really wish I could go on a regular basis, but like you that would lead to training for something I just can't fit in anymore. 2 days a week for "fun" is not an option. If you go that route, post regular pics, as I know you were pretty big in this fight game before and the pictures were very cool. Just re-read that babble up above and hope it makes sense. I get excited like a kid when competition is spoken of. Best of luck in what ever you decide.
Just posted a few pics of fights... Been in a lot of bjj and judo tournaments and man it's awesome. Yes it eats up a lot of your time, but you get in such good shape and learn a lot about yourself... I say go for it, its only beneficial to you. Are you looking to get into competitions or fight, or just get in shape?
Guys, for the record, Brett has already been this route and worked with some of the biggest names in the business.
Thanks for your opinions guys. I have to be physically fit for my new job, not only for the job, but also to keep me alive. I've done the traditional workout stuff so much in my life that I am sick of it, again. I have been training hard for the police for the past 1.5 years and I am tired of the workouts. I need to start into something that will keep me in good fighting shape for work, and I cannot think of anything better than BJJ and MMA. I trained for about 5-6 years in BJJ, MMA, and everything else under the sun. However, I have not trained in about 6 years and I am 37 years old! Michael, very true about our lives, very similar, even the job stuff. Like you, it is hard for me to only do something half way. But in this case, I think as I have gotten older I am better able to control the competitive demon that exists within me. One of my old teammates received his blackbelt in BJJ and runs a school not 10 minutes from my house (I used to drive 1 hour, 1 way to train for years). Drawbackbowhunting, very cool man. Looks like you have a wild style of fighting.....I love it! I don't think I will do the competitive MMA thing again, just the training for my health and to protect my life.
Now that I've woken up it was Shorin-Ryu taught by Richard Gomez in San Antonio TX...It never kicked in till you've pushed then the style, concept kicks in then you launch a Shin kick to ones head and he goes down the anger and rage makes you look for someone else. Then your mind enters the tunnel of Black Heat and exit into white light and you realize what you've done. Damn I miss that sport...Even now I'm looking toward another goal....I'll post something toward it.
Brett... Come throw down with me one day... I'll help you forget it. :D Just kidding buddy, not that ready to die yet... :D
If you've done it, then obviously you know what your getting yourself into. You fight pro or amateur? And who are some of the big names you've trained with. I'm getting into cook county corrections, where are you from man?
C I was pretty much a nobody who fought amateur mma fights, BJJ tourneys Draw. The guys I trained with are a little more old school and are spread throughout BJJ, Judo, and MMA. Here are a few: Lloyd Irvin (well, Lloyd) Rhadi Ferguson (Judo Olympian), Dave Kaplan (UFC), Leo Dalla (placed in BJJ Worlds many times), Mike Easton (UFC), Mike Fowler (BJJ stud), Melvin Foster (top 5 heavyweight boxer),and the list goes on and on containing many old training partners who have their BJJ blackbelts.....guys I trained with every day/weekly for years.
Haha, yeah it does, and he blows, what happened to him? Shadow, seems like you got a good camp man. Lloyd's a stud, Best of luck in your decision, stay safe.
Brett, if it doesn't take a heavy toll on the family, I'm all about it! My head DT instructor has a dojo 5 minutes from my house. I will get over there some day, but the regular shift bidding/jumping makes it difficult to do anything with regularity...
