Hello, anyone know of a safe alternative to roundup, it's illegal for the public here and I'd rather not spray harsh chemicals on my property. My plots aren't all that far from my well.

I'm guessing that is going to take all chemicals out if the equation. If you get a "safe" chemical it probably won't work. I guess that leaves picking the weeds by hand?

I don't know what you want/mean from safe? Where are you located that it's illegal?

In the scheme of herbicides, roundup is fairly tame.

    Found this on ehow.com

"According to a Cornell University factsheet on glyphosate, when glyphosate gets into soil, it doesn't go anywhere. Especially in soil with a high concentration of organic content, glyphosate binds tightly to soil particles, and microorganisms in the soil are slow to break it down."

What state are you in that you can't go buy glyphosate from a farm supply store? If you are only doing small food plots I don't think you would have to worry about it reaching your water source a good mix is roughly 2oz/ per gallon of water.

I'm in Canada, you need a licence to use the stuff.

You need a license to use roundup? Did you ask about bulk ag quality roundup...I have to have an applicators license to buy it here but normal store quality roundup is sold everywhere here over the counter and nothing special needed. I'm wondering if you tried to buy a 2.5 gallon jug at a co-op and were told you needed a license?

I'm obviously not familiar with Canadian regs so curious.

It may sound crazy but I have had success spraying weeds with distilled white vinegar. Sometimes it takes more than one treatment, but it does actually work. If you search for natural weed killers online you will find several different "recipes" that use vinegar as the main ingredient.

Here they banned it for cosmetic use but farmers can still use it if they're registered I believe.

I've read about those but I also heard it raises the acid levels in the soil. I have really good ph levels naturally and don't want to have to spend money on lime. I'm just trying to pick brains. Still a good few weeks before I can start my summer plots. We normally have a pretty short growing season but this spring is really brutal so the season will be even shorter. I usually disk the crap out of everything and by the time I plant the weeds are pretty beaten down but this year I won't have as long a disking time.

the only thing that roundup alone can kill is grass and small weeds just sprouted. mix 24D in and it will work on most weeds but yet that is getting weaker to

Thats actually not a bad idea. You should ask around and see if any farmers can either spray them for you or just happen to "lose" a couple gallons of it.
