Kids are not the issue 99% of the time.

By the end of this year she will have received a pay cut of around 20%, and teachers don't make that much to began with.
That says a lot, right now on how we view teachers.

Thank her for us... She is doing a good work and her reward is highly impactful. I'm sorry it isn't valued more highly.

Avg salary for a teacher in NY state is 57k plus benefits. That doesn't factor in a 10 month schedule...vacations ect ect not great but not to bad all things considering.

Look what someone makes with a masters degree, and then compare. Don't let that 10 month work schedule fool you, a teacher who is successful works way beyond that schedule.

My wife averages about 4 hours a night during the school year.
In summer Jenny takes class at college, because to keep your teaching license one has to have a certain number of credits.
So let's look at 57,000, and what it cost to go to school. Teachers with masters go on average for 8 years. The math is just not right to attract the best. We have the select few who do it because of the calling, but we are not attracting the best right now, because of money and hassle of teaching we don't.

I agree with your premise that teachers aren't appreciated...but some of that is wrong. The 2 month summer is closer to 3 (here in KY) and they work 730-230 weekdays only...sure time is spent outside the classroom in prep (Mom is a retired teaching consultant so Ive seen it first hand) but I'd say a situation where it EXCEEDS a 40 hour week and the 3 months of vacation is rare. It'd take 5 hrs per week extra to hit 40, PLUS an extra 400-450 to eat up the summer vacation time. They work a lot, and deserve every penny they earn, but they do NOT have it terrible especially considering the benefits and retirement provided.

It in no way takes 8 years to get a masters in teaching. I'll have a doctorate in pharmacy in 6.

The problem (IMO) with the math is this, we simply can't afford to pay the best with a free education system...it's just the way it works. A bright person going to school (with a completely open mind on what to do, money being a relevant part of their decision) simply has MUCH more lucrative offers unless they simply WANT to teach.

    The average American worker:
    52 weeks x 5 Days/week = 260 Days
    4 weeks vacation/year = -16 Days*
    10 holidays/year= -10
    3 sick days/year= -3
    3 personal days/year= -3
Total days worked 228 Days/ year
    * 4 weeks vacation AFTER 4-5 years of employment
Work day is 8 hours WORK with 1/2 hr. unpaid lunch and 2/15 minutes break/day

    The average teacher:
    School year = 180 days
    14 Holidays/year= -14
    5 personal days/year= -5
    7 Sick days/year- -7
    ? Vacation days/year= ? *
Total days worked 154 Days/ year

Cry me a river. If you don't want to teach, and you feel that your masters degrees can better serve you in another endeavor then have at it and find another job. And that 57k doesn't include benefits which range from 30 to 50% on top of the salaries ...so the 57 is more like 75k for a VERY LIGHT yearly schedule.....

What Masters program takes 8 years? Maybe if they are taking night classes while working. Maybe.

And teachers complain more than any other profession. That is not even up for debate And then they want to rub it in my face when they are on summer breaks, or spring break, or fall break, or Christmas break, but then complain about how underpaid they are? Please. They all know exactly what the pay will be before they choose the profession. And 9/10 teachers do not deserve the money they receive anyways. 9/10 suck and just read the textbook to the class, or re use the same lesson plan over and over and over and over again.

I know everyone has a wife, or a sister, or a mom, or a cousin that is a teacher, and of course, they are always the greatest teacher ever, working till midnight every night, creating lesson plans in the middle of the summer, yet, where are these teachers in real life? They do not exist.

8 years total, there is a year of teaching in the classroom after your 4 years.

Stop your whining, if you want to get summers off man up and teach.

Observations/Interns are including in the 4 years of undergrad.

I chose higher pay, rather than more time off.

Teachers make what most state employees make. In LA, a state environmental scientist/geologists, with a Masters degree, starts off at $28k.

Maybe for southern states it's a 4 year program, here one does a year of student teaching after the class work.

    :)

My wife did a 5 years and then 2 years for her masters. She has to keep going to school to keep her license.

Not to sound disrespectful or non appreciative but teachers do pretty well by all accounts. I do appreciate what they do.

The average FAMILY income in this country is 46000 and change. Most have little to no insurance provided and I'm not sure about the 4 weeks vacation either.

Pretty good chance the feeling was mutual with that attitude. By the way, its worth nothing.

You wouldnt have your degree or job without teachers. Kind of ironic isnt it?

According to this chart, teachers salaries are right on the national mark for a masters. Assuming the $57k is correct.

Teaching has its perks both ways, theres no doubt about it. However, viewing teaching from the outside in...its not that easy to critique.

Oh and btw, im a teacher...so pound away. :tu:

My sister is the dumbest person I know, and she won "Teacher of the Month" in LA.

    Just sayin'.
