Drug dealers try to use it on drugs and it doesn't work, the dogs still find it. The dog smells the weed and the hot sauce lol or whatever they use. Dogs can smell out individual items when they are mixed up. I just read in a magazine that a bloodhound has about 220 million scent receptors and a whitetail has over 300 million. That means a deer should be able to smell better than a dog and should be able to smell you through that earth scent.
i use the soap and sprays not the gear like pants and jackets. i cant afford that stuff. i think it gives you some more confidence. the soap and spray is not that much money depending on the time of year you buy it. i am trying it out this season for the first time so i cant give a valid opinion.
also i think human smell is easier to get rid of then drug smell. but in logic your post does make sense. but at the same time i think, like said before, i you can cover human smell easier.
Some are, most arent... I simply descent my clothing with scentless detergent and I'll let my boots air outside. I've found that some scents (at least i feel like) scare the deer away. Having no scent, is the best scent to me personally. I feel it makes the deer not expect anything (food, other deer, or animals). Although I occasionally use an earth or pine scent just because I bought it one day and i have to use it up.
First you have to make sure you are scentless, then you have to present a smell that they would be used to such as a doe in estrus scent (Tinks is my favorite brand). Before I go sit I will spray my stuff down with Scent cover to remove smell. Then when I get to the stand or where I will be hunting, I will spray a couple of bushes with tinks to cover up smell as well as have a smell that will likely attract deer. (note the attractants do not usually work this early, but having that smell is still a good cover scent. the attractants won't start working for maybe another week or two) Hope this helps! Here's a Link to Tinks' Website: http://www.tinks.com/ I use their attractants. Haven't tried any of their odor eliminators yet
I have been using a new product called Carbon Synergy and I have had good luck with it so far. I have had numerous deer directly down wind with no problems of them blowing. I know they have a facebook page and web site, it might be worth checking out. It was pretty cheap when I got mine too, thats another plus.
Another aspect of this scent debate is what happens when a deer smells human scent. There are articles that would have you think that when a deer smells the scent you leave walking they will immediately run into the next county, or if they smell it a few times will leave the area for good. But then there are many times I have gone into the woods in my work boots and pants I have been wearing all day to work in, to put out corn. I have walked all around the area putting out the corn and checking things out. Then maybe as little as 4 hours later I have pictures of deer having a feast. And the expressions on their faces when they left gave you with the idea they wouldn’t have a problem with coming back again, even though there was human scent on the ground, as long as there was corn to eat. I have wondered if maybe it would be better if, when I walk through the woods, that I don't try to cover my foot scent. Instead, it might be better just to drop a little corn as I walk.:D
