    Serious question...

Im in my stand today , after about an hour or so i have a big coyote walk up about 40yrds away. didnt have a
    clear shot.
Can i assume i wont see any deer after this? since a coyote is in the area?
    Am i wasting my time,
I dont want to use the coyote call to get him back fearing i might scare the deer..

Also, is it a bad idea to use a turkey call while in the stand hunting deer. It is turkey season too, Just thought if its slow bust out the call.

    Will this spook the deer???

    Thanks in advance

I'd use the turkey call if it's slow. Deer are used to their sounds. I use one walking in if I'm going to making a lot of noise. Kind of reassures the deer what the sounds are.

I agree ^! I have also seen bucks chase coyotes. So I wouldn't say your day is over just cause you see one.

A coyote is no threat to a healthy, mature deer. I've witnessed a beautiful 10pt charge and drive off 2 coyotes that were snaking through the woods, hunting for a meal, but the buck was by far the aggressor and the coyotes ran off and the buck went about his business!
As for the turkey call, it will only bother the deer if the deer keep hearing the call but don't smell or see a turkey. Both of these animals are incredibly aware of their senses!

You're worried enough about the yotes to possibly scratch a hunt due to their natural presence, but you're willing to bet that you're walmart primos box call will sound just like the invisible turkeys that are up a tree in the daylight?

:busted: Honestly, the yotes won't be an issue, but if you're hunting deer, I would only be shooting at turkeys if they happen by, not try to call them in. The less noise of any kind you make, the better.

Ben beat me to it. The no need to worry about the coyotes. Also, like he said, if you're going deer hunting, deer hunt. Focus on killing a deer and if a turkey walks by and you feel like shooting it, then shoot. The "noise" you make out there the more you decrease your chances of killing a deer.

I was gunhunting once last yr. it was about 1 hr before sunset, and a coyote comes by my stand about 75 yds away. I took a shot wi/my .243 but missed. He goes running for the next county, and I take another potshot at his back before settling back down. Then, about 30 min later I have a small buck walk not 20 yds from my stand headed in the opposite direction! He wasn't running or anything, just taking his time like most deer do.

If I see a coyote, I would not hesitate at all in taking him out.

I will take a coyote too.
Was just concerned if the deer head in the other direction. I was unaware that a deer will scare off a coyote

Do not think a coyote is a threat to a healthy deer. The less noise you make the better.

Coyotes may even help your hunt. Deer don't always run away from danger, especially if being chased. Often times they will double back and head back towards where the yote came from. Stay put and keep the woods quiet. I would only shoot at a yote if it coming for me. Otherwise I'd let nature do it's thing. I'm sure in 4.5 years of being in the woods a big buck has been able to evade a yote without being chased for miles. Hang tight and you'll be fine.

I have seen coyotes and then shortly after they left the area a deer has come in, but as in the aforementioned posts the deer I saw was a healthy mature deer, so keep that in mind. It's probably just better to try and take em out if you can and as quietly as you can.

Stay in the stand. Deer are used to smelling coyotes. I have seen deer after coyotes come through on a number of occasions. Turkey calling will absolutely NOT bugger deer. Just do it when there are none close enough to pick you off.

I watched a couple big Alberta does chase a coyote off a field! Deer deal with the little bastages daily. Stay put.
