over two weeks ago, I caught 2 little bucks sparring, glassing them for fun... out of no where a nice 3.5 year old come trotting in to check them out...
Deer are curious creatures. I am amazed at how often the sound of my climbing with my Loggy Bayou climber attracts deer. Very light rattling works this time of year, but at least here in southeast NY, it is the only time I have had any success rattling.
I tickle the antlers after the first week of the season. Last year I saw a full blown, trying to kill each other fight on October 6th. After the 15th of October I rarely hold much back as far as rattling. I usually try and simulate a fairly aggressive fight for about 30 seconds or so, then hang them up for the night unless I see something off in the distance.
The horns will be coming along with me starting now but I won't get aggressive until around Halloween. Sent from iPhone
I just started rattling yesterday and I plan on using tinks #69 from here on out. I usually try to keep a low profile until Nov. Going to try starting earlier this year and see if I can get some points on the board!
i did some blind grunt calling this morning and 10mins later i had a 7pt come in right towards my stand neck was swollen slightly, tongue was out, and he had nose to the ground every few seconds he wasnt smelling to hard though...
I've never rattled in a deer before the 25th of October in my neck of the woods but I'm sure it will happen some time. I use the grunt when I'm walking thru the woods in daylight hours just in case I run into a deer. Not trying to call'em in but I figure they hear me walking, maybe a little grunt on occasion won't spook'em so bad. :D
