I'm actually not kidding, knowing the limits and pushing them whilst close to the ground is a good idea. They are inherently unsafe but can be reliable when respected and used correctly. Dropping a foot or two is quick lesson the one can walk away from but scary enough to learn from

I have a fellow who helps with my hunter education classes and does a bang-up job on treestands. He gets four kids on the stage and gives each of them a fall arrest system. He tells then to put it on. At the same time, we turn off the lights! Why? You need to know how to put the fall arrest system on when it's o'dark thirty. Best to learn how to put the stand together and get your FAS on properly as it can save your life. Also, make sure you have the loop for your foot if you should fall. You stand up and take the pressure off your legs. Otherwise, the blood pools in your legs and you don't have long to live after that happens. I'm sure you have seen people at weddings or in the military who pass out after standing a long time.
