Is A.D.D. with kids a real thing, or do they just need more whoopins?

This is common in my family. My grandmother on my mother's side had 19 kids and I've heard most of them complain about this. Appears THIS is hereditary.

I have no problem with problems or work (actually one of the best at what I do where I work) I tend to overanalize and check and recheck and even triple check my work.

I get asked frequently to check others work.

I'm one of those that can fall asleep in a recliner watching tv and get up and go to bed and toss and turn because my mind takes off.:o

Did you really say this to someone else's child?

Pretty sure nobody's arguing that is not real, but we are calling into question how often it is diagnosed correctly.

its bull****. so what if a kid is hyper. he needs to go play outdoors not video games. everyone is different. dont try to give everyone drugs because they are different.

I'm sure there are real cases of it but probably not as wide spread as its diagnosed. Its has more to do with the society we live in now, everyone thinks they need a pill to fix every problem. In this case some of it has to do with parenting and not really wanting to deal with they're kids.

I think its real but I also think society is too sensitive about people hitting their kids. No one wants to see kids getting abuse to an extreme but i also think that kids need to get a little "reminder" when they need. My parents never spared their hand with me and I think that it was for the better. I know that when I have kids, I wont spare the hand if the situation calls for it to.

You guys should see the amount of people getting free drugs and pain killers from your local social services government building. It is out of this world expensive and ridiculous. And many of those same people do not need the medication and go on to sell them for profit.

Whoopins. My wife believes I have ADD and I believe I have it too, but I got whooped enough as a child to keep it under control.

My biology teacher who had a son with ADD even told me I had ADD. Might explain why im all over the place but I graduated college. School is alot harder for me(probably anyone) than an actual job, ill read the same dang paragraph like 10 times over from being distracted.

I agree. I was prescribed concerta ( I think that's wat it was called) when I was 14 and continued taking it until I was almost 18. And it helped, I was way more concentrated in class and able to control myself alot better in and out of school. It had nothing to do with bad parenting atleast with me as I was raised in a great family with strong christian beliefs and values by a my mom and step dad who both loved and respected me. I'm sure some of the young teens who are diagnosed with add or ADHD are from poorly parented households or had the prescriptions forced on them. But it's not all bs.

I just read this thread. I honestly believe like most diagnosis, that it is real, but overprescribed. If you add up all the figures like ADHD which is 12% of boys, then throw in Autism(1 out of every 50) kids, then a smattering of additional childhood diagnosis, what you have then is "normal" childhood behavior is the outlier. Let me make this clear, I believe in ADHD, I believe in Autism and i believe in mental illness even for children. However, what I do believe is that many are misdiagnosed children for the sake of the "medical industrial complex". I have a masters in education and have worked around kids. I can't tell you the number of kids that are medicated due to parental laziness and the ease and profit of taking drugs for life.
To be positive, if your kid has too much energy and can't sleep, think about what a great ER attending resident he/she will make one day working the night shift at the local hospital. I meet so many adults that spend no time engaged with their kids and then expect the kid to turn it off at bedtime. I can see when my own kids get off kilter. Both my boys are high energy. When I am complacent and lazy their high energy is magnified. We argue, we fight etc. When I spend time facilitating swimming, hiking, 4 wheeling in the hot sun, basketball, football etc. often times they will fall asleep in the car. It makes me tired also, but it beats the alternative. Many time its easy for me to plop down on the couch and let them play x box for 2 hours.
Society has changed also to a sedentary lifestyle. Qualities of ADHD would have been great to have working on farm. Work from sun up to sun down. Now its frowned upon. Sit in school all, sit at home all evening. In some cases it can be outrageuos and kids do need the meds, but for many, diet, exercise and some attention at home is all that is needed.

It's so amazing how we think in America we are the best, yet all these other countries are handing us our *** in everything that matters, lol

    They aren't in healthcare overall.

9 of the top 10 hospitals in the world are here and the vast majority of the top 100.

That's not saying there aren't great things going on in the medical field abroad. Just not at the levels they are here.

We are extremely unhealthy, so we need the best hospitals.

Look at how long we live compared to other developed countries.

That goes with the territory. We have more than other countries, lazier in many cases and free to be that way.

You've been to our Walmart so you know that I know where those comments come from.:D
