Is 1" cutting diameter on a 4 blade broadhead enough for a fast bleed out? I found a broadhead that I really like but, it is only a 1" cut on contact blade. I found another that is 1-1/8". It is a 3 blade. I would think the extra blade on the 4 blade would make up for or even do better than a 3 blade 1-1/8" cut. Any thoughts or comparative experience?
Yes, 1 inch is big enough provided it's placed in the right spot, and you're right in that a 1" 4 blade head will give you more cutting surface than a 1 1/8" three blade. While I personally have never shot a 1" diameter head, this past year I did switch from 1 3/4" mechs to 1 1/8" Slick Trick Magnums. My first impression of them was that they were tiny compared to the Grim Reapers. So tiny I almost didn't use them. I did use them, however, and I'm so thankful that I did. Not only did the deer drop just as quickly, but since they were so much more sharp I got a better blood trail.
Here's a little exercise for comparison of 3 blade vs. 4 blade; -Draw a circle, divide it equally in 3 parts (3 blade cut), now draw a line (artery) through the circle in any direction that doesn't intersect any of the divisions (blades). -Now do the same with 4 divisions and compare. There's no artery within the circle that a 4 blade will severe that the 3 blade won't, the extra cutting surface is to no avail. The bigger size circle on the other hand... that's a different story. A bigger hole = more hemorrhaging = deader deer, question is, how dead is dead enough?
When it comes to cutting diameter I've shot both 1 1/16" and 1 1/8" cut fixed blade heads with great results. So long as you hit in the right spot they won't go far at all. I have a hard time believing the 1/16" or 1/8" of diamater will make much of a difference on a good shot. On a marginal hit, you'll wish you had every 1/16" of cutting diameter possible.
I understand the circle, Rob, but does that really come into play on a double-lung pass through that we all hope for or a heart shot? I may be wrong, but if I'm going to make a wound channel through lung tissue, my take on it is the more blades the better. Actually, the sharper the better, but that's a different subject. I agree that the big mechs are great on a marginal hit and may save your butt on a poor hit, but I don't want to pick a broadhead for my setup based on the fact that I might make a bad shot. I don't want to expand my kill zone. I'd much rather keep it the normal size and just be able to hit it. All things being equal I would agree with you, but the 1 3/4" Grim Reapers I was shooting weren't sharp enough and the scary sharp 1 1/8" Slick Tricks put the deer down just as fast and left a beautiful blood trail that even this colorblind hunter could follow. As far as answering the question at the end of your post goes - just dead will do nicely. Deader than dead isn't required.
You will want to make sure it is razor sharp !!! a blunt broad head of that size will be like torturing the poor animal.
I use the Slick Trick 1'' standards which are 4 blades that are razor sharp , i've been using them for years , i never had a problem with them not performing , they left blood trails a blind man could follow .
I jumped off the expandable wagon two years ago in favor of Slick Trick standards. They kill a deer every bit as dead as larger heads. The reason I went with the Slicks is simple. They are all steel construction and have thicker blades than anything else I looked at. This makes them extremely strong compared to others. Plus, the short size of them makes tuning them a breeze.
Nope, because face it, if you put any sharp broadhead through there, regardless of diameter or number of blades, it's a dead critter.
I'm just soooo thankful nobody's sayin'.........."its like throwing an axe threw an animale". How tarded. LMAO
Last year I used a one Inch cut on contact BH. I shot a bear with It, he went 80 or so yards. Blood everywhere. I've saw 2 blades make an awesome bloodtrail and not so good bloodtrails. Same goes with 3 and 4 blades and Rages. One Inch will be just fine.
