Nice, I've been out all day today, this wind and standing corn is kicking my *** i think, seen nothing but turkeys.
That action sounds exciting! Glad you had a good outcome for both parties. Hope everyone had fun this weekend!
Hey Guys new to the site, but I like the local updates so I decided to join. Someone else already said, but Saturday was a great day to be out. Not only were the little ones moving, but the big one was keeping them all away from his doe. I will post some details later, but best day I have ever had in stand. Hoping to get the same results this weekend when I take my boy out. I can only imagine what it would be like at 14 to see what I saw last weekend. Good luck this week.
Cedar Rapids I do a lot of my bow hunting around here and Keokuk county. I also hunt around Indianola with my brother. Now that season is over and I am tagged out I have to live through other peoples stories. However, I am pretty excited to get my son out on Sunday. He had a shot earlier this year and missed. I blame myself I told him to use his 20 yard pin and aim a little high and the deer was at 25 yards. The arrow sailed right under it. I will post some pics tonight of my buck this year, not only was he one I had at 35 yards 2 weeks ago, but we have a trail cam pic too. It was a great hunt. Glad I am getting back into bow hunting.
Been out all morning. Seen 2 fork bucks, 1 small 6-8 point, a yote, and some turkeys... Been slow the last hour and a half though...
They are talking snow here by Monday and staying cold so this will keep the deer up on the hoof. I still got trail cams out and they really show a lot of bucks chasing so hope you guys have some great luck this weekend if you get out and Locked you need to get one of those big NE Iowa bucks lol I know they are there it's just being in the right spot at the right time.
ill be out after work. Just learned there is public land only 9 miles or so from my house so i am going to see how it does for a couple hors before dark.
Gah Bent you are telling me, but I think my season is on hold for a couple of weeks. My beautiful wife gave birth to our new baby boy so I will be keeping our other child busy and living through others experiences until I get out next. So keep at it boys!
Congrats on the new baby Locked! I haven't been on here lately--been busy as can be. But I found time to get out and hunt a couple evenings and ended up filling my buck tag! Greatest hunt I have ever been a part of here's the story... tl;dr version at bottom. SO THERE I WAS! Sitting in a tree line with harvested corn fields on either side. No blind just sitting against a huge maple tree to break up my silhouette. Passed up a young 8 pointer early on and then kicked myself because I felt I should have just filled my tag and not been picky. Didn't see anything after him and once it started getting close to end of light I was discouraged and wanted to go home. Packed all my gear up and took a few loud leaf-crunching steps toward the edge of the trees and saw a big body off to my left. Looked to be 80-100 yards away or so. Couldn't make out antlers at first from where it was but I could tell it was a buck just from the size of its body. So I watched him for a minute seeing what he was going to do and lo and behold he started my way. So of course I immediately started freaking out. I don't have much time to hunt the rest of the season. This could be one of my last opportunities. Shooting light is running out. There is a large-bodied deer walking toward me. I am frozen and afraid to move. Just standing by a couple trees no thicker than a baseball bat loaded down with crap that I packed in. And I mean this deer is walking directly at me. Keeps coming at me. Right at me. Holy cow he is getting close. By this time he was so close I was sure he had to have been able to see me. So now I am thinking about the crazy stories of deer being aggressive and actually attacking humans. So he is coming directly at me, head is lowered and I am getting ready to battle this deer. At about 10 yards I draw and am just waiting for him to lunge at me or start running toward me antler-first or something crazy. Shaking like a leaf but trying to stay as still as I can. My heart is about to explode. He takes a few more steps and stops. I have no idea what is about to happen. He raises his head. Looks around and sniffs for a couple seconds. Then decides he is going to walk out toward the edge of the treeline. Gives me a broadside shot and THWACK shot him at 4 yards. 4 YARDS! Just couldn't believe it. He ran about 40 yards and piled up. Absolutely the most awesome hunt I have ever been on. It is going to be hard to top that one! Plus it was the first buck I have ever shot so it makes it all the more special to me. Anywho I will post a pic of him soon and good luck to you guys as the season goes on! BHOD tl;dr Shot my first buck ever from the ground at four yards.
Anyone else getting extremely pumped?! 53 more days! By the way, does anyone know when you start buying tags here in Iowa? I tried to google it but couldn't come up with anything.
Heard August 15. New to the area and state. Anyone hunting public land? Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Cool thanks for the info. I am thinking about trying some public land this year. Never done it before though
Private the few times I hunt in Kansas and as of now public in Iowa. I found a few places near black hawk that I'm running cameras at and exploring. Also have someone making calls for me trying to find some private that's available.
