Good luck with the hunt. I may try and kill me an Iowa buck from Missouri this year. I have access to a 40 acre property that is literally across a gravel road from Iowa. It's not really bowhuntable but is perfect for rifle hunting. First buck I ever killed was less that 50 yards from the line. Used to have access to another piece of prime hunting land that was both in Iowa and Missouri.
I grew up in Iowa and have lived in Nebraska for the past 25 years. I think it's just wrong that Iowa charges non-residents roughly $500 to hunt. They require a small game license too, for crying out loud. I would love to hunt Iowa with my dad but I refuse to pay those prices. Just because they CAN get those prices doesn't mean they SHOULD. My dad can come hunt with me in Nebraska as a non-resident for about half the cost. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If it was a lot cheaper you would get a tag every 10 years or more. It's a very limited resource. No different than chasing trophy bulls in Arizona. It's priced appropriately for the opportunity. There is a reason we have a great deer herd.
I HONESTLY don't disagree with this at all! I just wish other states that hold the same caliber of deer (including my home state) would look into managing their herd the same way or at least reciprocate prices. If I get drawn for Iowa then I should have to pay what a NR in my state pays and vs versa.(assuming Ohio went to a lottery, which it never will)
Did I say that? No. Who deserves to hunt Kodiak grizz? Who deserves to hunt desert bighorns? To hunt the top end animals of every species costs a premium. Kill deer at home if money is an issue.
Money is not the issue for me, I just choose to stay and hunt in Nebraska because I strongly disagree with the Iowa DNR's willingness to raise prices as high as they can and still sell tags. That said, the reason I have a problem with it is because money IS an issue for many, and the state of Iowa doesn't care. You watch, the prices will keep going up as long as tags keep selling. In 10 years it'll probably cost a NR $1000 bucks. Keep it reasonably priced so a regular Joe can have a shot at a tag too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Back to the subject of Tom's thread, congratulations Tom. Wish you the best of luck out there in SW IA!!!
I know this is a bowhunting website, but Tom what is your deer shotgun setup? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have shot a lot of slug guns over the years, Ithaca deer slayers and Browning gold with a rifled slug barrel used to be my favorites. Now you could not get me to shoot something other than the Savage 20 gauge bolt action slug gun. I have a Leopold shotgun scope on one and a Vortex on the other.
Well then, by this logic, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho and a whole lot of other states are over charging for their nonresident big game tags. There are deer in most states, so Iowa has definitely not cornered the market on deer hunting. Hunt anywhere you want. But, like most things, you get what you pay for. Good luck Tom! You obviously see the value in getting an Iowa tag. lol
