Our new addition is "Cooper", I wanted to call him Radar but was vetoed. As I picked Cooper over the pup my wife really liked I was not going to make an issue over naming rights. Cooper is a Wire Hair Dachshund that comes from great blood tracking lines, his mom has over 300 recoveries she is owned by an outfitter in Illinois (Jeff Richardson) His father also has plenty of recoveries. I have had Cooper on Mock Blood trails every night for almost a week and for 9 weeks old he has done a great job, I expect very little this year but next year I think he will be good. Beagle001 and Dan I will help you guys out anytime. I am going to try to get him on as many trails as I can this year just to get experience. This is a new chapter for me I am pretty excited.
Tonight a neighbor called, they had shot a doe. Thought it was a good shot, but he knew I wanted to get Cooper on a "real blood trail". At 14 weeks I was really proud of him, the deer went 150 yards or so and Cooper found her. The blood trail was good you would not have needed Cooper but it was fun to see him work. The first 100 yards he was great. The next 20 yards so so. Then he smelt the dead deer and ran right to it.
Nice looking pup. Congrats to you on his first recovery. Bet that was fun seeing him work the blood trail !! Tim
I only wish the game Natizs here in Pa would allow dogs to recover deer...But''NOOOOOOOOO!'' I don't see what the big deal is?There would be less lost deer.More happy hunters. An all around ''win-win''If u asked me.... A good reason to get a second dog!I good dog,not a lap dog like the wifie has now(Pomeranian)Don't get me wrong! I love the hair ball....but I always wanted a outdoors kinda dog.......I regress! Good luck with that pritty puppy...lol
darn it thats an awesome dog. I want to get a bulldog and name him chug, but my wife says "NOOOO We don't need another dog" stupid wives!
That's awesome. I would like to get my dog to track deer, but I never got around to training him. I bet you will get a lot of use out of him in the future!
I started when he was 9 weeks old dragging a deer leg and having him track it and then let him chew on the leg a bit after he found it. Over time I lenghthened the trails. When he got good ( no problems with 90 degree turns ) finding it every time. I used deer blood, placed it in a water bottle that you buy at a gas station. drilled a small hole in the cap. I put deer blood that I got from a friend into the bottle and sprayed it out on a trail, put some turns in it. As he gets better I lengthen the trail. I have quite a bit of deer blood frozen. To get him used to being out at night I take him for walks after dark. He is a great family dog as well. My wife was not fond of this new idea I wanted to try but she is now really attached to him. Thanks for the kind words, I will post more as he progresses. He is still young so I am trying to get him on well hit deer to build his and my confidence. My son lays some trails now, so that I do not now where the turns and the trail is. It helps me to read the dog better. Dean
