True story. My parents used to have them.

Luckily there's a local company growing in our area that's doing terrestrial wireless and are adding towers every few months (we're in the heart of the Laurel Highlands, and as such, they can get great coverage with some optimally placed towers). Once we have coverage, we will be able to get 25-35mbs without and contracts or tie ins with any other non-essential services (like phone service).

We just got lucky. Our local electric coop applied for a grant to provide fiber services to their customers and were awarded the grant. They have been installing fiber for the last 3 years or so in our area. It's only available to the rural customers, so none of the small towns in the area have access to it at this point because they all have other options, but none of them are nearly as good as this. We have access to up to 100mpbs if we want, and it's all direct fiber to home so we don't share any bandwidth.

Yep, that's the only way (grants) small areas like ours will ever see fiber, and I doubt it will ever happen. I know Fitz is getting fiber up in Ely soon as well.

Up until this aforementioned terrestrial service, there were sections not 2 miles from where we are now that ONLY had dial-up or satellite as options and this was just a year ago.

Same thing happened to us BJE. My wife (The Enforcer) used to call and get us the promotional rate but not anymore. Only difference is that we are at 60 mbps instead of 30. But the last two days it has been extremely slow and it's starting to tick me off...
