Any advice for internet service in an area with BAD reception and no cable? When we remodeled the clubhouse at the golf course I (being the dummy I am) decided to build my office in the basement. I wanted all the space I could get upstairs. Anyway, it may be the worst area in NYS for reception down there. I get 0 cell reception. I've tried some of those wireless modems through cell phone companies (verizon, sprint etc..) they didn't work worth a damn. We don't get cable where we are. Our TV's run on satellite dishes. I was thinking a router somewhere upstairs and wired direct to my PC in my office? But actually the upstairs isn't "that" much better as far as reception goes. Any ideas? I figure if we can send people to the moon there has to be a way to get internet in my office.
Our rural power company has internet access through their power lines i don't know how it works. I do know there is a lot of poeplein rural MN that use this service. They all hate it but it is their only choice.
I believe to do that you have to be within 2 miles of a phone company Central Office where all the switching is done. If you're outside 2 miles, which his golf course probably is... no DSL. NY... did you try one of the Verizon routers. My buddy had NO cell service at his house but borrowed someones Verizon phone. It worked greak. If it works you can get one of those keys wireless keys for your computer. You can even run a wire up onto the roof.... a short ways to get better reception. It's not as fast as cable but it beats the hell out of POTS. Ask Rob or some of these computer geeks.
No, thats not true. We live in the middle of nowhere, long ways away from any central office and we have it. I asked the DSL install guy about it and he said there is some wireless signal they need to pick up but it's not hard to boost it to where they need it.
