3 days from our closer and I saw only a doe and her fawns. Heard them coming from a long way but was semi disappointed in a doe followed by her fawns. As it grew dark and I allowed them to leave I packed up. I've been entering and exiting through the corn field. There are 2 smaller fields, both standing with a couple rows that are wide and allow me to come and go unseen, unheard. They are separated by a small hedge row. Tonight while leaving, when I was approaching the hedge row I heard all hell break loose in the corn in front of me and thought oh $*@% I just busted them. I was carrying my green Streamlight Pen and although dark, I could see by the moon and saw something ahead. (The corn here is lower from lack of growth) So I shined my little green light to see two green eyes staring back at me at about 12 yards. Then they stood up and was taller than I. Oh $*(#. There was then ruckus to my left and the green eyes dropped. I turned off my light and stood there listening. I thought I could see a form ahead and turned my green light on and the eyes stood up again. I realized it had to be momma 3 legged bear and her cubs which were off to my left. Well she circled to my right and I found myself standing between her and her cubs. I took my bow and smacked the corn and said, RRRARRRR, Get the %*$*# out of here. And I listened. The cubs busted into the woods on my left and she's popping her jaws to my right and circling me. I moved toward her cubs thinking she's 3 legged, if she comes at me I'll either stand a chance rushing through the hedge and down the cornfield row in the next field or it's going to make an interesting read. :p As I move toward her cubs, they run off, I hear her behind me and I just continue through the hedge and through the next corn to my truck. WHEEeeww. Hopefully she won't be there in the morning. And to top it off, as much as I'm seeing her and thought about a bear tag, the landowner says, I don't want her shot....oh well. I guess I'll turkey hunt Monday instead.
Holy crap, Rob, talk about making the knees weak. Too bad about the landowner, because it sounds like you have her pretty well pegged.
A friend of mine tried to get a close up of a sow and her cubs once. 3 legs or not, bears can move really freaking fast! I do believe you are a truly lucky man! BTW, my friend made it back to my truck about 15' ahead of that sow. Once in the truck, I drove off with that bear standing there stomping the pavement.
He, he, I know the feeling all too well... You're allowed to shoot a sow with cubs back there? They're off limits here and for good reason, the cubs won't survive without her.
LOL, I bet you do! I was wondering about the sow w/cubs too...we can't shoot them either. Rob...your racking up quite a few good stories this year!!! Good luck..
Rob, fess up. Be a man. Tell us you pissed yourself.:p That had to get the old ticker goin bud. Glad it turned out ok.
Wow Rob, I know what I am getting your for Christmas! BEAR SPRAY After that incident you don't need to shoot a buck, I will buy ya a bear I mean beer anyway. Wayne
For all the times I've wished we had bears around to watch, those are the stories that make me glad we don't. :D
DUDE! I woulda protected you, Brah! Aint no 3 legged bear gonna mess with my Sence' (sp?) :D That sucks that the landowner wont let you take her... yet another freak to add to your collection :D
