The family and I were on vacation last week in Cherokee, NC and we came across this and a smaller elk feeding. The larger one (pictured) is a 5x5 and the smaller (sorry no pics of him) was a 3x4. I was really surprised to see these elk in NC, since I hadn't heard of that before. After a little thought though I am pretty sure these elk have crossed over from TN, since the TWRA has been trying to introduce and manage a new elk heard for a while now. If you look close enough you can see the tag in the ear and the radio collar around the neck. This was pretty cool for me since this was the first time I've seen a live elk in person. The kids got to see it too and were excited about it as well.
Alot of people would be amazed at some of the states that elk are now found in. I live less than 2 hours from some of the biggest bull elk around and there are still a ton of people in PA that don't know about our elk.
I could be wrong but I think I remember seeing where the WRC brought them in a few years ago. Maybe someone from the western part of the state will chime in.
I actually did a little searching after posting the pics and I found some information on NC releasing elk in 2001 and 2002. They released many in the Great Smokey Mtns so that would actually explain what I saw. Info here http://www.ncelk.org/
