CLOTHES: I prefer Permethrin treatment for my outer layer. Sawyer sells it in a kit for around $20.00. http://www.sawyer.com/products.htm#003 Repel sells single bottles under the Permanone name. You can also get the Permethrin from most ranch supply stores and dilute it and treat your own clothes. BE VERY CAREFUL if you do this. OUTER LAYER ONLY! You have to dilute the Permethrin to .05% and it is nasty while in liquid form. Once it bonds to the clothes, it is odorless, colorless, and repels almost all flying and climbing bugs. It also lasts through several washings and can last up to 8 weeks from one treatment. SKIN: Cover as much as possible with permethrin treated clothes, Deet for the rest... AREA: Thermcell works incredibly, but does not work on the move. You have to be sitting still and give it time to work. If it is windy, it is less effective.
Nothing but a Thermocell.. Everyone says you can smell the smoke off of it and so can I, but have had it blowing downwind into a heard of Does feeding 25 yds away and have never been busted because of it... Won't leave camp early season without it !!!!!!!!
I'll have to look into permathrin. I went scouting this weekend and ended up picking a couple dozen ticks off me before I could get back in my car.
Mosquitos are mostly what we have around here and I have used Permethrin very successfully for a few years. You can tell which pieces of clothing have been treated by where the bites are. I wore an older camo shirt one day last year and got eaten alive through the fabric (summer, only one layer on). Got back to camp and realized that shirt had not been treated. Rest of the week, I wore treated clothes and no more bites.
