Thanks guys but most of the issue is that it is mostly wooded with a few fields spread out fairly far from one another. There's a creek in the middle of some thick woods that's not too far from an opening i was looking at some pinch points too but all these decisions will be made after I can get out and see any traveling areas. It's in Jennings county. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It sounds like you need me to join you out there. I was out Sunday, every deer I saw was heading to any food source they could find. Including a nice 8 that would not give me a shot. I'm in the south too, yell if you need help dragging one in.
Ya I agree I think the key is going to be finding food no doubt about it. Thanks again guys I appreciate it I'll keep ya posted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guys i dont do plots but have ag fields boardering my lease! The Deer in my area will not enter a field in daylight hours! My last 2 hunts (looking for another Doe) i have seen 7 Bucks and 2 Does, most were hammering browse 1/4 mile in from Ag fields! If your not seeing any on plots dont count out a good browse source!
More snow moving in here this afternoon into tomorrow morning. What are your thoughts on hunting in the snow tomorrow morning? Should I find food source or thick cover or travel corridors? Do you think they will be moving if it's been snowing all night? I know tough call - this late season hunting is fun but hard!! I really LOVE hunting in the snow. I thank God every minute I am in the woods for creating such peace and beauty.
Mid-day is when I'll go in unless really coming down. Mid-day and evenings are the most successful time of day this time of year for me typically.
We have major movement periods mid day both days this weekend. You'll find me working the down wind side of the best browse I can find at mid day come this weekend...
Yup! I've been known to down a maple or two hinging it over and hunting it for the next 3 or so days...those fresh browse on their level get hit hard and the hinging adds cover in the future spring and onward.
I'm looking to start hinging a couple spots in my new woods. When during the year do you do this and how big of a patch do you cut?
Howdy fellow Hoosiers Southern Indiana here I live in Harrison Co. I bow hunt in Harrison / Crawford & Washington Co.
Welcome 1962, I just picked up a 120 ac. piece in Crawford Co. and am very pumped. No fields, all woods. I'm used to hunting field edges so I'm not sure what to expect. Also very hilly. Will be scouting a lot this spring.
Thats aweseom! I too was used to field edges and flat land before I started hunting in Ohio county. Good luck!
Hey fellow Hoosiers, last season wasn't too bad. It got a little rough towards the end but we got through it. I hunt about as far south west in Indiana as you can, a place called Posey co. I just hope next season will be better.
This winter has been tough but deer sign in our area is looking great! Already re-opened (un-fenced) our mineral sites and getting bucks drinking and digging a ton in them....time will tell how the year is gonna look mature buck wise but populations seem fine in my properties so far. Only issue with the winter was the lack of being able to do the normal immense amount of habitat work we normally do...not as much hinging occurred before the spring green...will be doing some now moving forward though as we have the last couple weeks. Couple pics from the one mineral site:
So Ty.. how did that fence deal work on your site this past winter??? Better than scooping out a half ton of dirt with a frontend loader?
Oh my gosh so much easier! It is like 5 and half foot tall fence and circled the mineral site big enough to cover a substantial amount of space but close enough a deer would never want to jump inside the circle. DNR approved and so much better than the shoveling method!
Well growth is looking good boys....harsh winter or not the bucks are loving the wet lush green up this spring is giving them. Have to post a couple pics up here shortly.
