Sometimes I whittle; sometimes I think. Sometimes I do both and the outcome takes me down awesome paths.

As many of you know, Mr. Russel built me an incredible Bogan longbow (see that specific thread). To the bow was added a cast set of resin antler limb bolts by dear friend Jeff Venable (see photo one).

Well, as snazzy as they are, the limb bolts got me thinking. Then in walks Rob's new "Kodiak" bow. Now that got me whittling....and in the spirit of more gift giving.

I decided to step the limb bolt look up a little-perhaps sterling silver. A carving I went.

I made the first wax image-a mt goat (since they are known to be inhabitants of Kodiak). Then, a second wax-a brown bear (see photos 2 and 3).

I cast the goat last Friday (see photo 4). The bear will be cast a week from Wednesday.

They look great on the bow (see photo 5)! However, I may change the design up a little. I believe the goat and bear heads should remain silver. The antler burr/button should be brass with a 5/16th inch hole drilled through the center. I will cast the two pieces as separate parts. By doing so, Rob will be able to flat file the brass (on the back) so that perfect up and down alignment can be achieved.

I have a few other ideas for Jeff and Russ-with time, I will finish a set for each. But, at least, you all now know what I think is better than mud flaps!

Russ, I have some prototypes made for ya (see photo 6 in the next reply)

    Oh no Jeffy pooh,

Sorry for not making that clear. My limb bolts stay as they are (never look a gift horse in the mouth). They were given to me by someone near and dear. They will stay in place for all eternity.

The new silver limb bolts will be photographed on my bow for effect only-that's it. The first set belong to Rob (he's my guinea pig as I work out the details). Then Russ will get his ( I have his design half modeled). His set will be followed by yours-although I'm torn. At first I thought about making yours with whitetail deer busts. Now I'm leaning towards little glass slippers-since your such a dainty NC warm weathered bloke. LOL....wouldn't be right to give you something as challenging as a deer since you have millions of them running laps around your house.

    Steve,

I teach a lapidary class, at the continuing ed level, three times a year. I do silversmithing, faceting, goldsmithing, and lost wax casting on the side (although I have never sold a thing-seems It would take the fun out of a great hobby! You should see the treasure boxes I have accumulated for my children. It is my plan to surprise them on their wedding days with many years of daddy's handy work).

    Rob,

The hell with the wife.....FEED ME SALMON! Rex...don't let the bastard out of your sight! LOL....

Thanks Russ. You are an inspiration!

    Jeff.

    OOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPSSSSS I mean Miss Sheila.

Is it one of those where the limbs attach to the belly of the riser instead of the back?

You might have to post some close up pics of it.

    Gotcha Jeff...easy to deal with.

And what, no reply to the Millions of deer lapping your house comment? LOL...you are a Sheila.

You should see it Russ, deer hunting for Jeff is simply a matter of stepping outside his door. One arrow lauched in any direction, at any distance, is a sure deer killer...so the rumor goes.

    Jeff.

Go to your local hobbie store and get a sheet of sticky back felt, it's only about $1 per sheet, and put some between the limbs and riser.

It will take some hand shock and noise out of the bow;)

Hey Jessica, good to see you here. Fellas, let me introduce a fine lassie from the great state of Wyoming. Jessica, when she's not killing **** with her bow or drawing portraits, works as an archaeologist/antropologist. She calls herself a "Cultural Resource Manager". This girl is the real deal anyway you slice her! I take great pleasure calling her "friend". Welcome her lads....
