Since I have not had any sleep because evidently my reaction to hydrocodone is not quite as adverse as my reaction to codeine, it still prevented me from getting any sleep last night and I just finished reading an article about “immigration reform”, I have decided in my mental state to respond to President Obama’s plan while being too tired to get riled up. Since a lot of greedy American companies and people knowingly hire illegal aliens in order to keep more for themselves, I have devised a viable immigration reform law that would actually do some good. When illegal aliens are encountered working in the United States, no matter what country they originated from, they will be immediately deported back to that country. All of their assets they have here in America will be seized and forfeited to be auctioned off. Any employer who knowingly hires illegal aliens will be immediately arrested for subverting US law and upon conviction will have all of their assets, to include businesses, seized and forfeited to be auctioned off. All proceeds from forfeited assets auctioned off will be used to reduce the national deficit. Americans then will quit hiring illegal aliens to do the job cheaper and be forced to hire people here legally putting more Americans back to work and lowering the unemployment rate. Two issues resolved with one policy reform, now that is effective.
They aren't stealing office jobs, lets face it they are stealing the jobs that we as Americans find ourselves too good to be doing anyway. Even at minimum wage rates. I say just seal up the borders and stop the illegal parade over for the future. Chasing down the ones already here is too expensive and messy of a process IMO.
I don't think they are stealing American jobs either. However, the broad stroke you painted about Americans being lazy is not accurate. I pull people over every day that are illegal immigrants and there is nothing that I can do. I have said this a thousand times and I will say it again. IF America were situated in the middle east we would be much more strict in the enforcement of our immigration policies. Could you imagine if we just let anti-American Muslims from Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and others just casually move around our country, unchecked, and not policed? It wouldn't happen and it would not be tolerated. People would take action into their own hands. But since the majority of our illegal immigrants are from south of the border, we tolerate violations, even repeated ones. I'll give you an example. I arrested an illegal immigrant that had no drivers license, was a .20 dui, and had been previously deported. Guess what? They let him go on an unsecure bond after he sobered up. Do you think he ever made it to my court date?...uhhhh, no. Here is my immigration reform. Enforce the laws we have in place and if the federal government is so darn weak, then enact state laws like Arizona and create a stink.
Well yeah I didn't mean give them free reign I just didn't really elaborate. By sealing up the border, you no longer give the ones here preferential treatment. If they ARE found because of crimes and such, lock em up or send em home. I just meant its futile to attempt to go and find illegals to send home. I may have painted with a broad brush, but I have met VERY VERY few people willing to work hard manual labor outside all day, much less for minimum wage. I say we enforce that businesses pay all workers fairly (atleast minimum wage), but lets not kid ourselves into thinking that will somehow open the playing field for us to take back those jobs. The same workers will keep them, they will just be paid more fairly.
A lot of those jobs "Americans" would not do as you say are those jobs that are strenuous jobs that employers get illegals to do for a very deflated rate (sometimes under minimum wage), so no, as long as employers get away with paying cheap wages most would not to them. However, if the illegals were taken out of the equation, the employers now have to pay fair wages for fair work and there are a lot of Americans in this economy that would jump on those jobs.
There is a process in place for coming to America legally and becoming a citizen legally. I am not willing to compromise on that, why would people coming from Europe have a different set of rules for becoming a citizen than people coming from Mexico, it just doesn't make sense. I'm all for people coming to our country, but they need to respect our rules and laws and do it correctly. If they cannot do that, they have no business being here.
The fact that 'they do jobs Americans won't' says a lot about how f'd up our welfare system is now. It's much more comfortable to sit on your butt collecting benefits taken from tax-payers than it is to actually work. So.... we need to change that. Welfare should be a safety net only that keeps you from starving to death, instead of the comfy hammock it has become. I say ship illegals back whenever they are found. Of course, closing the border is of the utmost importance. I have no problem with legal immigrants (My mom immigrated here in the 50s) but I have zero tolerance for illegal aliens. No amnesty without border security first.
I basically agree with Trevor. No one in America is going to benefit from shipping unskilled immigrant laborers out of the country. The cost of this would not be just a few more pennies for a head of lettuce...we are talking billions. You might believe these people are just a cheap labor alternative but they are the ONLY option for unskilled jobs in many cases. They do work other people are not willing to do. Take away these workers and most of them will not be replaced causing the collapse of labor intensive agriculture. Then what?
I'm not sure you quite understand the type of jobs we are talking about if you believe Americans would jump on them. My dad pays $14-$18 per hour for guys (almost all of them uneducated) to work on his turkey farm and he has a helluva time keeping the place fully staffed. It's extremely tough work so many people don't last very long. I worked there for years when I was younger...I don't think most people I know would last a week doing that type of work. He has never hired any illegals but I know of other larger turkey operations in the area that have.
I do agree with closing the border and if crimes come up giving them the boot... I don't agree that Americans will want the jobs we gripe about them taking though... Because of what Christine said. You make far more on welfare and unemployment than you can on minimum wage working your *** off, several people I graduated with have proven that fact to me when I challenged them that they are full of ****. Heck my cousin got a $8k tax refund when she didn't hold a job that fiscal year... Tell me how that is even possible...
I believe it’s completely insane to discuss any immigration reform without securing our borders first. We gave 3 million amnesty in the 80s and look were we are today! There will be yet another repeat without correcting the root cause of the problem! I'm also not keen of the idea of giving 11 million illegal aliens amnesty. Doesn't that give them the path to the same benefits as we have? E.G. welfare and unemployment? They don't abuse that now because they can't!
Amnesty is nothing more than telling millions of more to come over illegally because eventually we will give up and give them legal status. When Fox was president of mexico, he said he would not address illegal immigration and drugs flooding from mexico to America because it was America's problem. Revoke NAFTA with Mexico, secure the border and tell Mexico "Okay we took care of our part of the problem, the rest is all yours."
Deport them all. It will be no more expensive than all of the social services they abuse as well as all of the other costs associated with them. There should be hefty penalties to any individual or corporation that hires illegal aliens also. Set up m60 pits every 150 yards on the border, anyone who makes it can stay.
I say lets be fair and equally allow people from every country to illegally come into the US. Lets start with allowing 100,000 illegals from each country starting with Pakistan and followed by Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
