If you hear of anyone selling a lever action 30-30, let me know. My son wants a deer hutning rifle. I'd like to get him one.

    Thanks.

Looking mainly at the 336 marlin and the mossberg (464?). Wouldn't overlook the right winchester, either.

The first gun I was ever given ( I still have) was a 30-30 lever action Winchester. I cracked the butt of it and had to use some hardening compound to fix it, then resanded it. It is still a cool looking gun that gives off a sense of the Old West. Good luck Jeff.

I'm not gonna lie. I want one, too. I'm actually in the market for 2.

I have always loved the lever action rifle, just a cool looking gun. They sell them at most retail stores, I have seen the marlin model the most. Good luck in your search.

When I did rifle hunt that is what I used....Marlin 336 30-30. Its a great gun and did everything I needed it to. I might even take it out a couple times this season when I go home to hunt with my dad.

I have a 100 yr Anniversary Model 94 Winchester. What a great little gun. Could never part with it (dad & brother gave it to me my first deer season). Perfect gift for your boy!

If you don't find the gun you want, I have a bolt action .243 I would part way with. Based on my ex-wife, I doubt my sons ever get the chance to hunt. Might as well let someone use it. I really could give a crap about the money.

Lunger....I appreciate the offer (sincerely). I dunno. I want to get him something he'll have forever (this thread is a testament to that....based on some of the replies). I kinda want to give him the 30-30.

I just called a new dealer. You can buy these things, NEW, for under $400 (not including taxes). Who knows? Maybe we'll gun hunt, together. I'm all for it.

    Thanks again. 2Lunger.

Gmmat, ever consider a muzzleloader ? They are so much fun and the newer ones are deadly accurate out to a decent range too.

Yeah. If my bowshop owner had wanted to sell me his the other day, I'd already own one. My son went ML hunting with some buddies, Saturday. I just wanna hunt with him. He's a bit intimidated with bowhunting. I don't blame him. I've been full-bore for several years, now.

I couldn't care less what gets us in the woods together. And, I have 2 farms I could gun hunt on, if I wanted to.

The 30-30's are just cool. Sorry....lol. I'll end up with one....and I want to get him one he'll keep (he has several shotguns/rifles and a ML).

I just called Wal-Mart. $367 - New. It's looking better and better. I'd like to pick me up a used one and him a new one. Heck, he'll end up with both of them, eventually.

If you know of anyone looking to unload one, let me know. Thanks.

Looking at gunbroker.com......it makes me wonder.

WHY would someone pay more for a used gun (with no extras), than a new one? Seriously, the checkered birch stock is $367, brand new....and it has a $35 rebate. On that site, they're selling for that or sometimes slightly more....AND you have to pay your local dealer to receive the gun for you.

    I don't get it.

i started off with the Marlin 30-30 but didnt have a safety (only half cock) so my mom wasnt having that (former MP) so pops sprung for the Winchester with the safety version the next year. great rifle! still have it and fires as true as any of my newer rifles.

Much like eBay... I just do not understand it either.

Have you looked into the Henrys? I don't know much about them, but they look pretty cool.

Good luck Jeff. My passion is bowhunting - but I'll always continue to deer hunt with gun as well for one reason - FAMILY...1st shotgun season around here is major tradition.

    Josh:

I didn't know (until just now, when I looked) that they made a 30-30. New, they start at $750. Maybe I would think about one for him. But, I may not hunt with mine more than a couple times a year. More $$ than I want to spend.

They look really nice, though. Thanks for the heads-up.

both of my boys have a Henry Golden Boy in .17hmr (gift from grampa) and they love em... i've shot em a few times and they are super fun and have "the look" with the octagonal barrel and such... probably worth lookin at a Henry if you can... personally I plan on getting a Henry Big Boy in 45LC to go along with my Ruger Vaquero

I swear in PA, probably 6 out of every 10 people used a lever action 30-30 to hunt with. At least thats how it was back in the day when I started out. But me never wanting to use what everyone else did, I used a bolt action 243.
But I will say a lever action gun is a fun way to hunt. I have one in 44 mag and it is a blast to shoot. (pun intended) :)

Sorry, Scott. I thought that was Josh that posted the Henry info. I just looked, again.

Supposed to be plenty of 'em around. I just need to call the pawn shops, I guess. Probably buy one new and ne used.
