For those of us that hunt public land have you read any of the fact sheets deer archery lately? I saw that Illinois DNR is now requiring ALL deer heads to be submitted for CWD testing within 48 hours of harvest.... I saw it on the Castle Rock sheet and called the office, the DNR guy told me that it was new this year and they are still working out the specifics with the biologists. He said he was not sure what to do if you got a buck you wanted to mount if you had to submit the head..... Anyone else have any info on this?
Nope, have not received anything from the IDNR regarding submitting heads for CWD testing. Most of the public land hunting I do in IL is in either southern or central IL. Is Castle Rock more in the northern part of the state where CWD has be positively identified?
I'm pretty sure it's 'all' the deer from Castle Rock and a few other northern hunting areas -not all public land in IL.
The 2 State Parks (public land) in my area do not have any of that information on their websites yet. Still just says you have to have the windshield parking tag and report harvest numbers by February.
It will probably be similiar to the WI CWD testing process where you get the deer caped out. They can remove the lymph nodes in the neck once the hide is skinned past the mid-neck.
This is the only info I found on the DNR website about CWD. http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/hunting/Documents/FirearmDeerHuntingInfoCountiesTestingCWD.pdf
I've looked at a some of the fact sheets for different areas in Northern Il, its just come about for Archery according to the guy I talked to. He was not even sure what to tell me to do if I got a buck....
Christine - You are correct its not all public land, I've seen it on Castle Rock, Lowden Miller and a few others, I've not had time to go through most of the Northern zone. This is what they are stating at certain sites: On-site submission os ALL archery harvested deer heads along with corresponding harvest information is required within 48 hours of harvest to test for the presence of Chronic Wasting Disease. It figures the state would do something lame like this and not even have the specifics laid out for trophy bucks. Didn't mean to alarm everyone, just thought this was B.S. and wanted to save anyone from having an issue. I'm going to call right before the season starts and see if they figured out what is going on. I would hate to take a nice buck and have to drive to the butcher and drive back out so they could test the head and then take it to the taxidermist....
And if you don't get a deer while hunting Shawnee National Forest you'll surely hit one with your truck as you leave. you get to be in the woods not have to drag plus the deer dies next to your truck. WINNING!
Thats right selfbros i live in williamson county and have two dodge them with my truck. I work midnites.
I talked with another park and the biologist is now saying for these areas if you get a buck you will have to call and work something out with them to get a sample.... sounds like a pain if you ask me.
