Has anyone seen any of this? Bureau county is just SOUTH of me. I guess the police had quite a few calls about a black bear sighting, and yesterday it was confirmed!

    Anyone else near Bureau county?

I read about it and saw the pictures.

I'm hoping nobody offs him/her anytime soon. (it would be legal to kill him on sight)

I think it's neat. Granted, if he/she starts hanging out in people's yards or threatening livestock then he's not so neat anymore.

Oh, I didn't know he was caught. (I guess I could try reading the links folks put in their posts. :deer: )

I wonder if they'll really be able to tell if he was wild or not. If he was truly wild, is it right to put him in captivity? Maybe he'd rather be shot?

Well if he was actually really spotted in June like the article says, that means he's been successfully keeping himself alive for the past 7-8 months. I think that is pretty interesting on its own. I'm curious as to what the bear had been eating to keep itself alive if it were not a wild bear.

Bears eat corn. Lots and lots of corn. I think there's some corn around here in IL. ;)

Maybe that's why it is so small compared to other normal-sized black bears. It hasn't been getting it's meat because it was a captive bear that was used to being fed by its owners and didn't know how to fend for itself.

well it didnt say how old he was so we cant assume 200lbs is small, and the first article says he was captured while he was in a hibernative state, so maybe he was wild! never know, that would be pretty cool.

    Useless info tidbit.

Bears do not truly hibernate. Back in college we called it 'torpor'. I'm not sure if they still call it that... but anyhoo.. It's not a true state of hibernation like a chipmunk falls into.

    ...and now you know. :)

What a lot of people fail to realize is that bears are like people, some big and some small. You can have a 5 year old bear thats 200# or one thats 500#. You can also have a 15 year old bear thats 500# or one thats 200#.

First off. No I DID NOT. I hated both my options, so I did not vote. And two, that has yet to be proven. They are both whiney little bit....Nevermind, it's all a lost cause.
Thats right, I waved my american duties, and did not vote!

I suppose, I could try to pass it off as a Newfoundland???
