are acorns dropping in your area? white oaks? red oaks? pin oaks? if not, what are your deer eating? muskadine grapes? persimons? green vegitation? I know they will go to the ag fields, but what are they eating in the woods?? I have seen 0 acorns on the ground
They are still hitting my bean fields, but with the white oaks raining like a thunderstorm...I don't see that holding up for much longer. Acorns are definitely falling here.
South Carolina here. The White Oaks, Red Oaks, and Water Oaks are dropping acorns now. I'm pretty sure it's due to this drought. We got tons of rain early in the summer then it just disappeared in most parts of the state. Most deer movement has been ten minutes before complete darkness or morning. I have seen 90% of my deer in the mornings to mid day. It's been a very interesting season so far. The deer are also still eating the soy beans, corn, and grapes.
A little early for acorns in AL, but they should start falling by the first week of OCT. for the season opener on the 15th. other than that food plots.
Acorns seem to be falling like rain around here. While sitting in stand they are constantly falling. If the wind blows with any force, more fall. It is actually a bit tough getting on deer because they are not moving much. I watched a doe and her fawn bed and eat 20 yds from me for about 2 hrs last Tuesday. They are on the acorns but they aren't moving around a lot. With a front heading in tomorrow I am going to try in the morning. Hopefully that will get them a little more mobile. That seems to be the only time they move much lately.
Phillip, the acorns falling up where you hunt will feed the deer where I hunt if this rain keeps up...flooding every where around here.
I think the unusually cool temps so far this fall have started the acorns dropping. I was hoping they'd hold off a few weeks but that's not necessarily the case. I need 10/1 to get here!!!
I would say its an average crop here.. the white oaks are solid but the Chestnut Oaks are dropping especially well.
I spent the weekend at the lease and the acorns are falling but not yet heavily. With 2 weeks to go until the opener the timing looks good. There are no ag fields and the deer are hitting browse, wild plums are getting hit, feeders of course,(this IS Texas). We recently had a week of rain,(about 8") and that bodes well for food plots.
