If you could do "shoot and release" bowhunting… would you?

WHA was the first thing I thought of when I opened this thread. Hard to believe that was 7 years ago, but yeah......I'm kinda surprised at the responses here based on the uproar with WHA back then.

The ironic thing... in 2007 a lot were against baiting, driving deer, mechanicals broadheads and crossbows. Now you get crucified if you even hint your not for these things. Boy things have changed in such a short time !!!

So with that said... If I shot a mechanical dart out of a crossbow, sitting over a bait pile while the deer are driven slowly towards me... would you guys still be haters ?????

Heck yeah I'd do it. I'd still kill does, but it would be neat to be able to see bucks full potential. Do all the homework like now, if you get the chance, tranq em. Then next year, you get to do it all over again. When a buck reaches 6, 7, maybe 8, then you can take him out for good, should you get the chance. Granted, it would breed some pretty smart deer

Yes I would. Understanding that this is the world of "make believe" and that the deer would suffer no ill effects. Absolutely I would do it. How fun would it be to have a hero picture with the same buck over a three or five year span! lol

I hope this isn't thread jacking, still on the same subject. What about animals like polar bears? I mean some wouldn't kill them but to tranq him and take pictures of them I think would be awesome! My girlfriend wants me to shoot a bear just so she can hug it. Don't know why but it's her dream to hug a real bear. This would be perfect unless it woke up then it would be a real kill!

It's already done with Rhino's in Africa. Not sure if anyone hugs them though.

Since I do understand "hypothetical" and "no animals were harmed in the making of this movie" AND the fact I could kill for the freezer and THEN keep hunting...I'd do it in a minute. Maybe then I could actually draw my bow more than one time a season. I've actually thought about this and kind of look at trail cameras as my "catch and release" trapping, since I no longer run a trap line.

I LOVE to eat and cook venison in so many ways it would be hard to give up............having said that to be honest as the years tick by I find myself dwelling on the fact that a life was ended by my hands, an aspect of hunting I have always respected but never enjoyed (you would have to be mentally ill to ENJOY killing something).

I see so many does where I hunt now that we don't even worry about targeting one, rather just take one when it's convenient and doesn't mess up a buck area.........well passing so many does means watching them frolic around and nurse their young most days..........two things that don't exactly make you want to reach for a weapon.

Yes, I would gladly take a few pics and let the deer go if that were possible..........then I would develop those pics and pin them to trees along his favorite trail just to mess with him and let him know the score :)

hypothetically speaking... nope wouldn't do it .. with all the time spent scouting, setting up, sitting on stand, then add in the cost of stands, cams, bows, etc,,etc,, I'm still a meat hunter..

I think that is really just insane to be perfectly honest. I am not sure why the "hunter" always wants the "honor" - shouldn't you be honoring the creator and thanking the good Lord for creating (Genius 1:24) "creatures that move along the ground and the wild animals".

I think that the idea of a "hero shot" to honor the animal is a bit disgraceful to say the least. I mean are you honoring the animal or are you saying ahhh look at me I killed this awesome animal - now pat me on the back? Look, I am guilty of it myself - I've got a Facebook profile picture up right now of me holding a turkey that I had just harvested - ahhhh look at me!

So yes, I think that it's a bit ridiculous for you to be able to shoot something just so you can get a couple photos of yourself with the animal. It's not about you - I haven't been a hunter for very long, but with the amount of camera time that some hunters like to give themselves I ask: have people forgot about who actually put those animals on the earth for us to hunt?

Isn't he the one that should be getting the credit. Maybe just his creation - his animal alone should be in the photo... Just my two cents, doesn't make them the right two cents. But if your hunting for the chance at getting your hands on the animal or a photo opportunity, go to a petting zoo.

For the guys that say no, what if killing was illegal and this was the only option?

Well what if the dart had a range of 300 yards and you could shoot them from your living room and that was an option? I mean enough with the "what if" scenarios.

Hunting or more specifically "killing" animals within the frame of the law is legal so we don't have to worry about it and shooting darts at deer and slapping them on the rear and watching them run off is illegal as far as I know... So we've established what with this thread?

    Move someplace else. ...

Or fish 12 months out of the year.

To me hunting is only hunting if the consequence of my hunts ultimate outcome is killing the animal. That doesn't mean I my measure success, or enjoyment by the outcome but rather what I trying to achieve in the pursuit.

First, your use of "insane" is flawed but that's another thread. I'm not sure how you went that direction but I'm sure the OP was really talking about "hypothetical" not reality. Don't know how you think taking a picture with an animal that was harvested is glory seeking and not God honoring. People take pics for a lot of reasons. For me, it is to remind me of the hunt and success I had. I even take pictures of scenery whether I'm successful or not. Most folks know I didn't create what's in the photo so the glory is not mine. When discussing what's in the photos I can then honor God if I like. As humans we like to share our success with others and photos allow us to do that. Some of us like to brag a bit too and there's no harm in that; we all get humbled at some point. So let's take the "grip and grin" part out of the equation. Let's assume you've killed all the deer you want to eat, arrows are never broken or lost, gas is free...get it? Fantasy world...just for fun. Remember, hypothetically... I'm still doing it. Catch and release hunting. No harm, no foul. You have the excitement of connecting with a deer, learn from the experience and the deer moves on unharmed. Why is it so hard to think outside the box and have some fun with it?

"Well what if the dart had a range of 300 yards and you could shoot them from your living room and that was an option? I mean enough with the "what if" scenarios." Dude, this IS a "what if" scenario. Maybe that's why you're struggling with the idea.
