If you could do "shoot and release" bowhunting… would you?

I love hunting, I love bowhunting and I love eating red meat. The chase of horns, antlers and backstraps were always my passion and have become my livelihood. Season after season I see hundreds of animals taken from the field by ecstatic hunters. We take "trophy" photos and then load up the animals in the truck and head to the skinnin' shack. Sometimes, I wish we could give the animal a pat on the ***, watch him get up take off and try to outsmart him another day. Obviously that can't happen, and I'm totally happy to grill the steaks.

With that said, hypothetically, if you could legally shoot a buck with a poison dart to where they would pass out inside 100 yards, for say 15 minutes so you could take photos, etc. and then get up and go on their way… Would you do it? Why or why not?

I would love that. I don't need that much meat and pass on many because I don't need the meat but with that being said, it would piss my landowner off something fierce and I would be in search of new land to hunt.

Not a chance. I love to experiment with cooking the animals that I kill. I have stuffed venison backstraps with mushrooms, pepperjack cheese, and ham, then wrapped in bacon and smoked on the grill.... to brown sugar coated butterfy fillets wrapped in bacon and grilled with butter. I just love the aspect of cooking and eating everything I kill, and having others open themselves up to trying something new that they never thought they would enjoy.

I think that would be great, especially for someone like myself who doesn't have a big piece of land to hunt or manage. I don't have 30 trophy bucks to choose from so I have to take the most mature buck that walks in shooting distance. If this makes any sense, shooting the scrub bucks and only letting the trophies be knocked out for a quick picture would change the game completely.

I already do with a video. Capture myopathy kills 20% of deer from drugging/stress with trained biologists. It's not like darting a Rhino. Besides, making animal tranq drugs available in aisle 3 at Gander will never happen.

No. I enjoy just seeing them even if I don't have the desire to kill them. I've regretted passing some of the bucks when the season ends and I haven't gotten the one a really want. This year probably won't be any different. Also I like the fact that most don't know I was even there when I passed on them. Trying to keep an area unpressured is a challenge in itself especially after all the pressure they felt from waterfouler and rifle hunters.

I am content with the way it is now for the most part. I do miss the extra doe tags !!!!! That took the edge off waiting to kill something big.

    Interesting question.

I would in certain scenarios. Full freezer, tagged out, to hunt lands otherwise unhuntable, to hunt animals otherwise unhuntable (think rhino), etc. I'd prefer the blade over a dart but I wouldn't be against it per se.

I will pass. Knowing my luck something like this would happen when I went to take my "trophy release photo".

How about rigging up some type of blunt rubber point with a paintball in it... You could "leave your mark" and the deer could live to see another day.

No, if fishing sure, with bow hunting...no. Way to hard and way to much invested in the harvest from my POV.

I ain't getting up at 0400 to shoot a dart at an animal. :) If I am hitting the woods, it is to spill blood.

No, I like to eat them. And a nice big mature buck gives up some awesome neck roasts that I jsut can't get off of does.

I kind of do the catch and release by standing, drawing, putting the pin on a tiny spot on the deer's chest, and holding it there while counting slowly to five. Then I let down. It is awesome practice, and when I started doing it, it helped me learn to stay calm when drawing, and more important, focus on and practice picking a pin and aiming, at a small spot on a deer that I really want to shoot. I highly recommend it, especially for new guys, it will help you when it counts!

Nope, tasting the meat you worked so hard for is at least as good as the hunt itself.

I really only need so much meat in the freezer. So I pass a lot of deer, it would make for some fun practice to be able to do catch and release. I enjoy the taste of fish, but I don't keep every fish I catch. Would be pretty cool if I could do the same hunting.

Does or a wallhanger = no. I like venison too much and like Justin said stuff on my wall.

A buck that I'm not taking to the taxi? Yeah that would be a cool option.
