well.. it's almost that time to do some preparation. so i have tried to come up with a good food plot plan that will provide growth for bucks and population and of course make this years hunt better... i'm looking for something that's low maintenance and drought resistant, cause in ky it seems like we go forever with out rain. its about an acre or so in size, with that said what do u guys think about dividing it up and splitting one side in soy beans and the other in clover, oats, rapes and pea's? i was also considering alfalfa, but doesnt that require cutting and keeping cut back if the deer dont? any idea's.

Go to your local Ag, coop or university. They know what will do best in your soil type. We plant 30+ and have tried most everything. We do not use any of the commercial "deer plot" stuff anymore. Make sure you test the soil and lime/fertilize as required! I help allot of folks that skimp on this. If you fertilize without the proper pH, your wasting your money!

We have a good mix of crops. What has really helped is brassica. Our herd pretty much stays out of it till we get a couple good frosts. Then they hammer it. Once the sugar content rises its like crack to them, not to mention rut starts up. We have noticed that it really helps with their fat reserve too. When we butcher, tallow hangs off them now.

Also we have a lot of warm weather stuff as well, but we also have allot of browse and mast on the property, so our primary focus is late season, because we usually get lots of snow.

Tecomante makes some good ones. Used their baby 50-50today mix last year. Has everything but turnips so its a good spring plot
I usually add other commercial stuff around the edges near fall for the turnips. One of the members here has a great blog about food plots smallacrehunting.blogspot.com I think is the address.
