Temp here is -17* with a windchill of -41* right now. It is supposed to get worse as the day goes on. I think I'll stay off the lake for a day or two. Frozen fingers don't work tip ups very well.
I haven't made it out lately. A lot of or lakes aren't producing well lately. And with it being -31 today ill stay inside Sent from iPhone
People have been out but not a lot going on. And then we just had several warm days with record high temps. Then it rained last night like someone was pouring it out of a bucket. The creek in front of the house rose 15 feet, the ice went out and now there's flooding going on everywhere. Now the temps have dropped below freezing and we're suppose to get hammered with lake effect snow off Lake Ontario. So far we've just got a dusting but the winds are around 40-50 mph. The heavy snow is suppose to be tonight and tomorrow morning. I've heard reports of anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet. The lake has about 2 inches of water on the ice and places where it appears to be open water. You wouldn't find me out there. Was at our hatchery about 10 and the water was a foot or more deep on the floor. At 12 there was almost 3 feet.; Water was at the bottom of our hatching tanks. With the warmth and then all the rain all our snow had melted. Weird damn winters lately.
I spent another day on the lake yesterday and caught a couple keepers. Here is a pic of the 1st catch of the day. I'd say it's 25" at least. I have never had to worry about weight so don't have a scale but would guess 4# maybe. I threw it back as I think 1# to 2# is better eating. Nothing as big followed but still caught a few. I am finding that incoming phone calls are the best way to get a fish to bite. They take you mind off what you are doing and make me miss more bites than they are worth.
Not yet thank God. The water eventually dumped one tank on it's side and took away some of our tank insulation. Work day Sunday to make necessary repairs and cleaning. Eggs are a month late this year. We get them next week. The late eggs means we'll be stocking late which adds another problem with severe water warm up. We loose oxygen and the hot temps will kill a lot of fish. We can't stock them until they're at least 2 inches.
I had to put the extension on the auger yesterday. It would bottom out with the 42" auger. You can have half our ice if you want.
I guess snag is an incorrect term. I caught most of them jigging a Salmo Chubby Darter with a couple minnow heads hanging below.
What would you do without the electronics. It makes fishing so much more interesting not to mention frustrating. Don't you hate when you know they are just inches away from the bait and just won't bite? I'm looking forward to pics of some nice slab crappies.
