Going out tomorrow! Can't wait!! I have that same shanty Rick. I call it the Piss tent because thats pretty much the only reason I bought it. With out that my wife won't go. Man, just seeing those flags up gets me excited! Be safe everyone.
My wife is burnt out from me bowhunting by this time of year so it's my turn to sit home while she is out playing. Ice fishing is not going to be on my to do things for a long time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm heading back out on the lake in a few minutes. Hope To find something bigger than yesterday. Pics later if I get lucky.
I honestly think they are the best made traps on the market. They are Heritage Lakers. They have a copper tube the trip wire runs in that is sealed and packed with grease. We fish a lot at night here and can at times leave these in for 48+ hours and despite the holes freezing they will still go off easily because the moving parts are either well under water or inside that grease and sealed. I also like the fact that they are very tall. Sometimes we will setup a line of traps on a dropoff line that can be several hundred yards long and since they are tall it's easy to see them when they go off. I put white reflective tape on top of the tipup, and red reflective tape on the flag, and this way with how tall they are if you see red above white with a spotlight it means you have a flag. The only downside is that if you are putting a lot of them in the sled they can be heavy. They are all made from hardwood which is nice for durability but they are heavy for sure.
I use Frabil Pro Thermal Tip-Ups. I like how they cover the hole so it takes longer to freeze over again.
I do like those tipups, and also love that you can see the spool when a fish is running, it's just difficult up here to see them from a distance away when we have lots of snow. The other thing that happens all the time up here is the recreational snowmobilers run over them at night because they can't see them ahead of time, that's the other reason I put reflective tape on mine.
I only use Beaver Dams. Been using them for years and never had a problem with them. Cost more then most and well worth the money! Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
Thats what I using now, just wanted to get a few more for my kid, might just go with the BD's. But I like that way the flag is higher on Matts rig!
I personally wouldn't spend the money on beaver dams, never have never will. I've used HT's for years althought I don't tip up fish much. My brother's been using the same HT Polars for years with no problems. He ice fishes in Canada every year with them, this year it was no warmer then minus 5 the whole time he was there and the preformed great. Althought I'll be trying some new ones in the near future putting in an order for them this week.
Here are a few pics of my season so far. Most of these walleyes came from lakes in Northern Wi. were the daily-bag limits are 2 or 3 fish with only one being over 14"
I just bought a Frabill Arctic Fire and a Beaver Dam tip up to compare before I get two more. Personally, I prefer the Frabill. Especially at $10 to $15 cheaper than the BD.
Went out yesterday afternoon and this is my first catch of the day. I caught a couple more smaller keepers and a snot rocket I gave to a friend who likes northerns. Fun day all together.
