Please becareful out there I just got burned due to a leak. I was in the shanty and I believe some water had gotten inside the unit it and it made a boiling sound so I turned it all the way off. Well I had my cell phone music on so I couldnt hear the leak but I did smell some propane which I thought was normal as this is the only heater ive ever used. After about 10 minutes I went to light it and one big woosh of flame filled the shanty and I jumped back and thank gosh the shanty flipped on its side. After all said and done burnt lip and part of my forehead with mustache, eye lashes, eye browes and hair singed. I got back up and flame still coming from unit and I burried it in the snow to put of the flame then when I picked it up and I could still hear the leak. I double checked the knob and yes it was still on off. Scary chit so please becareful you ice fishing people. Idiot T
Dude.. Tony.. its like 20 degrees out. Put your skirt away.. you don't need a heater today. And thanks for the invite.
Mike I had it off for awhile then turned it on for a few minutes then some dang noise started. I turned it off then back on to see if it would do it again. That flame went straight to the ceiling. Dan I got some pics and I will post them later but not that bad. Just my lips bothering pretty good right now. The stache is ruined lol I am glad nobody was there to witness this so maybe next time Mike.
I have the same heater I use to warm the tent up at the end of the deer season. I run it for about a half hour before bed and the same when I get up. I had a small piece of rubber get caught and it started to leak.
The butane one are the ones that get me. I use a Mr Heater on a 20 lb bottle that works pretty good. Not a fan of those 1 lb bottles. Just to damn spendy.
That sucks Peak. Glad to hear that you are ok though. How has the fishing been? I have been out a ton since first ice. Fishing on Shangri-La has been pretty slow. Caught a nice walleye the other day that is now in the freezer but that is about it. Let's get out and fish together soon! Hope you can make the derby again this year!
Thanks for the post T. That's the same heater I use in my shanty and though I've not had any problems with it, I will be sure to double check it from now on.
tara told me about this yesterday while we were fishing... sorry to hear bout that man! hang in there, glad you are ok! see you soon!
My dad just picked up a new house. (bout time). He said they went out the first time with it, and REALLY did not need the heater. With two guys in there, there was enough body heat. He does still have his portable heater, and that thing almost killed us with the 30 below temps out side. It was a great little guy, I think it was the MR. Heater brand? But yes. they are very dangerous when they want to be... The house he just picked up was called the Zach Shack.... Very cool. err warm, I guess...? http://www.zackshack.com/fishhouse.html He got it in Mossy Oak (the original pattern).
YUP, lighting a match while you've been smelling gas fumes is definitely not a good thing. LOL Maybe take it outside, open the door for a minute or two... something. What did we used to say...... here's your sign. LOL My brothers favorite saying... "I'm sorry for any inconvenience you may have caused yourself". LOL
