My season from hell continued tonight. I saw the biggest buck I have seen all season, he was coming my way, but at 50 yards he hung a left and headed the other direction. I was sitting on my food plot in a stand where the red X is. Wind is out of the N (top of pic). There were 8 does to my right that came into the plot via the orange line around 4:00. I was all stood up and had my heater body suit off of my shoulders ( those things are great for cold weather) when I hear some crunching in the snow to my left. I look over that direction and see a spike coming up the yellow line out of the woods. He makes it up into the food plot and I see another deer behind him, a nice buck 125-130 ten point. Then behind him I see a picket fence coming out of the hollow. This was at least a 150-160 ten point, which I have never seen before. Not overly wide maybe 18-20 but he was TALL on all of his points. The spike immediately headed left or N but the other 2 kept coming toward me digging thru the snow to get at the clover. I had my video camera along, but it said "Temp to low to access HD" not sure what that means. It was 10 degrees. The last time I ranged them they were at 50 yards. Too long of a shot for me with all that bulky clothes on. They took a couple more steps toward me and then hung a left and followed the spike out the North end of the field. The does fed out into the woods away from me. I later had 4 does sneak up behind me on the blue line. They either smelled me or saw me turn around to take a look at the squirell making all that noise. Alltogether I saw thew 3 bucks and 12 does. At least they know where my food plots are and I have 2 more weekends to get it done. The weather is supposed to stay cold thru next weekend so they may be back. I was telling my neighbor my story from tonight and he sent me this pic. I'm pretty sure this is the buck I saw tonight in my food plot.
Least you still have hunting season ahead of you when you see these deer. I saw 9 does from the end of my driveway, to my parking spot! I didn't see a single thing the last 2 weeks of my hunting season.
Hell of a encounter John!! Best of luck with that big boy!! Had to be exciting seeing him for the 1st time.
Dam John, so so close man keep at it. with the low temps they will continue punding the food (I hope) Good luck J
Man John, if you kill a good buck at this time of the year, with these low temps....you have my respect.
You were to the right of where I took my does last year and the buck this year? (on the map) Looks about where your camera was when you got the mid-morning shot of the big 10... Didn't see where you said anything about wind direction, but there's another book buck that would have fallen had someone been in the stand on the right of their path in the tree you cleared out for a climber. I'm calling that tree for next year. Keep after 'em buddy; it'll make it all the more special!
Same stand Greg, X might be off a little. The wind was out of the North, switching from NW-NE that tree I shot my turkey out of wouldn't have worked. I might put a ground blind in the corn next weekend over there.
What time did the deer start showing up? I'm thinking about going out tomorrow afternoon for a 'birthday' hunt. I don't think I've ever done much hunting on my birthday... so a nice present to me would be a doe (EAB) and then a nice 150" buck. Haha.
Good point, Dan! I may go tomorrow afternoon as well, depending on if I get this month's column done tonight which I'm procrastinating on right now... Would be the first time since I took my last buck in mid-November. Been kind of nice not feeling like I HAD to go like other years in the past...
I saw the does at 4:00 and the bucks at 4:20. Still not real early. But at least it was during daylight. They are getting hungry. I just checked the long range forcast. Friday night -3* Saturday +9* Saturday night +4* Sunday +14* That should get them in the food plots early. But it might be a bit nip in the trailer.
Nice one.. see you next weekend. LOL. I started to write something witty about if I came down there, it would half-nippy in you trailer.. but that would be politically incorrect... so never mind. :D
