I wouldn't beat yourself up to bad. I have seen many a fellow miss at that distance even with a high power that shoots lasers. At the same time regardless of the shotgun that is still quite a poke and can't be argued that it is at the upper end of it's range.

I have rattled and grunted at a ton of deer and about 90% have never given me a second thought and just kept walking. Not all bucks will fall for it and if he is confident and has the experience to know what his guns can do then why try calling to a deer that may spook him off?

. 165 yards is nothing for the Savage 20 guage. I killed an 8pt last year with mine at 274 yds and it dropped in its tracks.

With 24"+ drop and a minimal amount of retained energy..... :poke: Another example of what not to do.....

The 220f is a 200yd slug gun. It's designed off the 110 platform with a one piece stock and floating barrel. With the federal premium Barnes tips 200 yds is not a problem for this gun. I personally haven't shot a deer further than 50 yds with a slug but I know a couple guys that have taken many deer with this gun out past 150 and personally witnessed it. Slug guns have come a long way

I think " what not to do" is different from person to person. I practice out to 250 yds with that gun quite a bit and I know what the gun and myself are capable of at that range. Apparently there was plenty of "retained energy" as he dropped where he stood. I like to get as close as possible to take my shots but sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

facepalm.....that sucks still though. But not the same, this was just a pure miss. Shooting through brush, misses or bad things should be expected.
