I learned "again" just last year that an hour often isn't enough time to give a wounded deer. Usually MUCH longer is best! I hit a nice (for my area) 8pt with what I thought was a "killer" shot, right where I aimed, and waited exactly an hour to get out of my stand. I initially found great blood for about 40yrds. This was where I last saw the buck, and thought he'd be real close because I had waited the hour to trail him. I was wrong. Then the blood just stopped. I never found my arrow and I never found that buck. I believe I got just one lung and hit the far leg, so no exit wound. A deer can go a loooong way with only one lung. It's amazing! I think this is what might have happened to you. Good luck anyhow.

I'm not saying I would have made the correct decision after sending an arrow into a deer like that, but it sounds like you had all the info to wait more than an hour. Sucks man. Its the woulda, coulda, shoulda, when you don't recover them. Live and learn.

Tough to stomach, really tough. Been there done that and it stinks! (never with that size of buck or even close to that size).

we looked all day and the dog worked her but off...but no luck... That may be a positive thing, if the shot was not as I thought and maybe was not fatal... If the buck is dead, I promise we will look until we find him. The search will continue until he is found or shows back up on camera... I met the neighbor today and he was getting as many pics of him as I was.... Super nice guy, and he will be looking daily as well... Actually, I think if the buck if dead, it will be on his property... That is the direction it was headed.

It can happen to any of us, but it sure sucks to be me right now......I feel terrible shooting a buck of this caliber, or for that matter any deer, and not making a quick recovery....

Thanks to all..... Will let you know if anything new develops....

That sucks man. I shot at a huge buck last year during shotgun season, in flooded timder, and he hit the water and gor back up and walked off. Tick stuff in my woods too. I couldn't find any blood because it was under water. I looked blindly for three days and then said the hell with deer hunting. Well at least the rest of 2011 season. I hope he survived too.

Sorry to hear that. Is there any water around? If there is, you may want to check it out. My buddy found one out in the middle of a river.

Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear. But I'd like to say something. Based on what I've read on this thread, you did everything you could to locate that deer. There's something to be said for hunters like this. Too many times we hear or read about guys not following through and going the extra mile to find a deer they shot. It's good to hear you went that extra distance and are continuing to look.

I know, it stings and you are probably at a point where you lost some confidence. Keep you chin up and keep at it. There is no shame in what you did before, during or after the shot. The only shame I see is that the deer didn't come home with you.

Good luck the rest of season.

This, is the part that really bothers me about deer hunting. Its good to hear someone is going the extra distance to find a wasted animal/meat and a set of antlers?
