Fishy???? Aint nothing fishy about this story boys.. Ive been on kyhunting for ahwile and Mr. BHicks is a stand up gentleman. Weve been watching this deer from the time he has had just the post coming out of his head to the monster he has turned into NOW!! And as far as ETHICS go i dont know what more you want from a guy. Of course nobody wants to loose the meat of the game you harvest. I guarentee we have all had to dispose of some meat that has gotten freezer burnt due to the lack of not eating it in the appropiate time slot. But he made a sort of questionable shot backed out for awile not wanting to push the deer into the next county like many unexpierenced rookies have done. And since we have gotten 5 inches of rain in this part of the country since Mr. Hicks shot this deer i would say that would probably make it a little difficult on a tracking job. Went in and looked all day today in the pouring rain with no luck today. And tommorrow going back with the dogs hoping and praying for a recovery and if you would have read his post he states that its a jungle in there and little visability. Before you go throwing out bad judgement calls on a guy maybe you need to read this whole story AGAIN and put yourself in this situation. Push the deer and never make a recovery or back out, give it time, and hope for a fast one! Maybe the meat will ruin, you always take this chance hunting in warm weather but beats the hell out of being haunted the rest of your life by this deer not knowing if you rushed the recovery on him. Good luck BHicks hope you find this monster......

In my opinion you can back out for 3 days and a 1-lung hit deer will still be alive unless you run him out of air and blood. Just my
experience with 1-lung hit deer as I played that game for almost 5 hours last year.

I one lunged and center punched the liver on my 11 pointer in December. After 3 hours roughly of waiting time my buddy and I jumped him for him to run 40 yards across a river then die on the other side. I either caught him at the tail end of dieing or I got him up to reopen the wound and then he bleed out the rest of the way. Not sure but I think the jumping of him helped.

We may have jumped him without knowing.. We gave him an hour after the shot, then started tracking... There were 4 of us, so if he was close by and not dead, he likely did move on, but we would not have heard him because of the heavy rainfall that started just about the 15 minutes after we started tracking...

It is STILL raining this morning, but hopefully that will not hinder the dog...I am meeting the guy there at 10 this morning... He has about a 2hr drive in.

Man, I hope you find him. There is no worse feeling as a hunter than this. I think we call can say we've been there. I have a feeling your shot may not be as good as you think it was. Otherwise, that deer would have been dead a long time ago. Trust me, I know what happens during that moment of truth. Sometimes shots that look really good aren't, or vice versa. Things happen so fast.

I "drilled" my 10 pointer from a few years ago only to not find him until the next morning. The shot wasn't as "drilled" as I thought and he went quite a ways. Even bedded down, leaving pools of blood.

Now go in there and get him! We're all pullin' for ya!

7 pages and no one has used the word "closure" yet? I'm disappointed.

It seems that not everyone is as sensitive as you are. :ninja:

Oh, whats that suppose to mean, Greg? You think I'm too sensitive? Well sorry I like to express my feelings!

<running into the bathroom crying, and slamming the door>

Seriously though, its only a matter of time before we hear "closure" and "you owe it to the animal".

In my opinion if the tracking dog does not find him he is still alive, or went a long long way before he died. Odd's are if the dog does not find him he is still alive.

    Good luck.

Unfortunately that isn't necessarily true ... the dog can lose the scent many ways .... let's just hope he doesn't

If the deer is dead, his carcuss will stink to no end with this heat and I'm sure he's been ravaged by yotes. Those dogs should have NO problem finding him.
