I'll also say.....there isn't a damned thing to be ashamed of. And, I hope you're not. It's just one of those things. I'd have shot him, too. Most here would have (and thought he was 13" spread). I hate you didn't get to keep him.....and it cost you some $$ (biggest thing).
Is there anyway you can protest the fine? They have to be willing to cut you some slack. That big of a fine over 1/2" is unfair. It's bad enough your tag is gone and deer is confiscated.
I still hunt in tx and used to live there until i moved across the red river into OK and they made the law last year in the county i hunted in and are very strict on it... Laws a law and it'll get enforced but it just depends who your GW is and what side of the bed he woke up on. 1/2 inch thats tuff luck but you did what a man would've done and i know a lot of people that wouldnt have done it. But TX, what county are you hunting in? I hunt some in the panhandle but mostly in Clay in north tx and we do not have to check in our deer. EDIT: Laws a law and it'll get enforced (there should be exceptions but i do not know them).
Man, just sleep on it. I understand your emotions are high right now. I know you were pumped about hunting that ground this year. You manned up and took you lumps. I'm completely sorry. How the heck is a guy to know a 13" spread on a quick opportunity that often comes with bowhunting? I will be back on the 15th and I want to take you up on the hog offer. In exchange I seriously want you to go back home with me to IL. next year. Free of charge. All you have to do is pay your tag and license fee and I will hold no restrictions on our farm for you. You can shoot whatever the heck you feel like. That is a promise. Just save up this winter and apply this spring. Man, I really hate to see this to such a great guy.
That's ridiculous IMO. If in question are you supposed to put a tape on him real quick? Sorry that happened to you tx.
That is stupid... How in the hell is an archer supposed to tell the difference between 12.5 and 13" at 20 yds more more? You don't suck, your GW does...that's crap.
A man with your high level of integrity does not suck. You are someone your family can be proud of. My already high level of respect for you has just increased.
RESPECT. Those guys at Hagerman should have let you walk with that deer being only off by .5 inches. My goodness! Greg, you have my respect.
I'd say that was a pretty silly law. In parts of our state they require the 3pt rule (3pts on one side), but length or spread... that's just retarded. I have a great Idea though, I'm going to create a ruler that you can project on his head to measure... then.. you have 7 seconds to measure, draw, then shoot... yeah.. probably should just work on changing the law instead...
Dang, that sucks, 13" spread rule seems to be a bit hard to accomplish, say you shoot a huge buck with tons of mass but he has no width, what do you do then? He's mature. Respect for you BTW
TX that a terrible break man. Kudos on hunting and killing the buck. The laws and restrictions are a bit unfair to the hunter. Like many have said it is hard enough to count points in the heat of the moment let alone try to use pythagorean theorum (sp?) to calculate a spread. If you choose to appeal it good luck to you sir.
That certainly does suck, Greg...but man, spread that story - more good than bad will come from this. That takes a pair to give yourself a ticket!
Nothing to be ashamed of. If you left him lay, then you can be ashamed. I had a buddy mistake kill a buck a few years ago and he turned it in. The GW shook his hand and said he was thankful that he was honest enough to man up to the mistake. The GW didn't fine him and didn't take his tag. I can't believe the warden in your case did that. Thats a real shame. Keep you chin up buddy.
