Right there with ya, I've had to do it a couple times and was with my dad once when he had to put down a fawn.
that's tough when you have to do that. I've had to do it myself as well. We cant shoot them here either or you will get a ticket for illegally discharging a firearm on a roadway. The police have to come and wait for dispatch to even clear them to discharge their weapon as well before they can shoot. So instead of waitin for the all the clearances from 5 sources i've done it a couple times with my knife as well. Always carry a knife... not for that purpose but you never know. Hate you coulnd't keep it. What happens if you would have taken her? You get in trouble?
Yeah, its not an easy thing to do Rick. You did the right thing though. And this is why Christine is one of my favorite BHC members.
No, not likely, but we are talking about Liberal Md here. I know plenty of cases where the deer is just picked up by the motorist or someone else before law enforcement arrives to make a report. They just drive by it as well.
I have tire ironed one. I know its actually Illegal but I just couldnt let it lay there! And im like you Rick, it just feels weird!
Certainly it's the RIGHT thing to do, and it's something we do because we respect these animals. Not a fun thing to have to do by any means, but certainly the RIGHT THING to do. Many PETA lunatics would be far less compassionate, however, they don't realize that what we do IS the ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS in our eyes. Be the shooting them with a quick kill, to feed our family, or stopping on the side of the road and ending one's suffering.
When i worked at the sheriffs office, we were sent to a deer/ car accident. When we arrived the man was all bloody and sort of crying. We rushed up to see if he was ok. He proceeded to tell us that he felt so bad for the deer and didnt have anything in the truck to kill it with, that he just applied the rear naked choke until she quit moving. I look back and laugh sometimes but know that has to be hard to do. Ive dispatched tons of deer but it was always with my service weapon.
I'm sorry, and I hope this doesn't disrespect the doe, but this is SO badass. Christine, you are my hero. If I wasn't married... Sal
A few years back a doe got hit down road from where we were working. She was banged up and just laying in a pasture. A pretty heavy lady gamewarden showed up.........she couldnt climb the fence to get in the pasture. had to take her around to the gate. So there she was with a side arm and a shotgun. Shot at the deer with the shot gun and MISSED At a range of about 3 feet. I asked if she wanted me to do it. She informed me I was not allowed to touch HER weapon. I just walked off leaving her there to finish off the doe and get out of the pasture her self.
