I have had the chance to meet a bunch of hunting celebrities at the different shows we attend. I have been invited on Lee and Tiffany's bus a couple of times but the coolest time was when I was invited down to their farms. They bought a bunch of product and I got to deliver it. I rode around with Lee and Mike Earp(he works for Lee) and check out a couple of properties and put out mineral. I stayed at Brad Penny's place and went to a few more farms in the morning before heading home. Lee and Tiffany are really down to earth and you can talk to them about hunting for hours.
The parents owned a small newspaper in my home town back in the late 80's and they got press passes to all Pacer home games where me and my friend would go and pretend to be journalists, taking pictures and getting a couple quotes. We were 16-17 y.o. and really just wanted meet our idols. We had locker room access and would always go to the visitors side. Hung out with Bird, Magic, MJ, Barkley, Dominique, Isiah etc. They all knew we were bogus, but they didn't care. Bird did every locker room interview buck naked (awkward). Magic was friendly and gracious with everybody. MJ never remembered to bring his toiletries and was always bumming off of Brad Sellers. After every game, Barkley would have 3 cold Miller Lites (in the old white cans) waiting on top of his locker and they would all be gone within 30 seconds. For a high school kid it didn't get any better.
I was in college (the same college as Malone and where he now resides) and riding with a couple friends on a rural road. We were in my buddy's old truck. 3 of us were in the front, with 1 in the back. The 1 guy in the back just happened to be black. He wanted to ride in the back. Of course, the truck breaks down. 5 minutes later, Karl Malone drives by and stops. We are all pretty excited about Karl Malone stopping to help us, but no, he immediately berates us for making our buddy ride in the back of the truck and called us racists. He didn't even help us. He did offer our black friend a ride though. ***hole.
Lmao... mostly because 5 minutes after the car breaks down, 3 dudes are still sitting together in the front seat.
I've talked to Charlie Alsheimer a couple of times at local church sportsmen events. Use to play annually in the Ernie Davis Memorial Golf tournament and met a lot of NFL players. LT almost (well he actually did) sent me flying backward after hitting me on my shoulder asking, "How was that drive?" I saw Bob Folkrod in the local Lowe's store one Saturday - he's a little-bitty guy! Met Fred Butler Jr. at a NYS Hunter's Safety Course... his daughter was taking the course along with my buddy's son. Fred is the Director of Marketing at Huntin With Honor. Someday I hope to get to go on a hunt with him. Well... I guess that's about all I got.
I have run into Mugsy Bogues in Lowes...he was shopping for light fixtures. Lived in the floor above Rik Smits (the Dunking Dutchman) in college. -Bill
I can't find a good video of it, but he is big into motorcross now. It is quite comical to see such a large man riding the bikes that are built for your average size Joe.
Goose hunted with Shawn Stahl in Fremont MI. Had a beer with Matt Stafford's gf's dad in Lauderdale. Bought and took shots with steel magnolia(country group) in Nashville. That's all, nothing too cool.
Winston Groom (author of Forrest Gump) on a regular basis. He lives in my town. Chocolates not included!
In college he was dating a gal who I think was a gymnast...maybe 5' tall...next to him @7'4"-ish provoke lots of, uh, discussion. -Bill
Stan Potts was in our store several times a couple of deer seasons ago . Can't say I was too thrilled to have him around cause one of the first tings he said was .... "I'm here to put this area on the map" . Don't think I ever want the area I hunt placed on the map that way but it never happened anyway . He left empty handed and we're still flying under the radar
