    GregH,

Actually there is no legal age...providing the youth hunter is accompanied by a mentor and the situation meets five requirements. I will let Texas Greg explain. In Texas, a youth can hunt on their own at age nine providing they have passed a hunter ed course. I doubt I would let my kid do this though.

A kid getting into the woods/hunting,well that's a positive thing no matter how you look at it. Who cares if it's a compund, xbow, gun, whatever. Have a blast! Good post

Will, that setup is nice, pretty creative. Congrats to her!

    Thanks AJ,

The thing I like about hunting Texas: the kids get to hunt for $7! Yep, a $7 youth tag buys five deer, four turkeys and all the exotics they can shoot! It's a great state to bring young hunters along.....

This is correct. No minimum age, must be with licensed parent ,(or mentor), private land, in possesion of all valid licenses and tags, and must be proficient with the chosen weapon.
I have seen a GW put a kid, (8 years old), to the test. dad and jr. were hunting during a Texas youth weekend hunt. The weapon they had in the blind was a .300 WSM. The warden, thinking dad might me poaching and using jr's tag, asked jr if he could shoot the gun. Jr was very nervous but said yes sir. The warden asked them to demonstrate. The kid was too scared to do it, he could shoot a .22, a .223, a .243 but was intimidated by the big gun. ( The dad had a history of shooting and using the kids tag. someone called him in)
So, myself, and other parents at my hunt club make sure the child is capable of making an ethical shot whatever the weapon of choice is.
Y'all have seen my "iron doe" targets, well, Lily will have to consistantly make 5 out of 5 shots with a crossbow at 20 yds. When she is at 95% proficiency she will be allowed to hunt.( I don't know if I'm at 95%)

You have good purpose to use one and I can completely see the logic (and agree) in your thought process.

BTW, I LOVE your daughter's name.
