Yeah I always thought it was kind of goofy myself. I don't really care one way or the other or never thought about it that much, but it is kind of strange. Why is it THE Ohio State University? Is there another one we should be aware of lol? And you dont' hear it from anyone like THE Syracuse Orangemen or THE Notre Dame Fighting Irish etc..... It is kind of funny when you think about it.
What about Miami calling themselves "The U". Last time I checked alot of schools have a U as in university. So in theory I attended....although briefly..... THE U of Rock County. In case the name doesn't ring a bell, its a 2 year college in southern WI. Everyone can call themselves whatever they want.....except people calling the Dallas Cowboys "Americas Team". That just doesn't sound right.
The U was weird to me, at first, too. ONLY reason I give them a pass on that one is.....their helmets have had a huge freakin' U on them for as long as I can remember. But, OSU....(excuse me)...THE OSU has been THE OSU for over a century and a quarter. And, I've never heard it referred to by that monniker - except by football alumnus (and, only relatively recently) and .......well....we'll leave it at that. When we played OSU in baseball, they were known as OSU.
I guess I still miss the point of this conversation? I mean are we really talking about the name of a university? Does it really matter what the students / athletes refer to it as?
No it doesnt' matter what they are called. It's just weird that they are different than anyone else IMO. THE ohio state university? LOL it is really weird the more you think about it. What happened to just............. OSU or Ohio State?
It was more than just conversation, you were implying (actually saying) that these athletes look like a joke and stupid saying "The Ohio State University". Whether they look stupid to you or others or not, that is the name of the University... To me, this thread was made just to talk negatively about those who you feel look stupid. Am I wrong? My apologies if not.
Well.....since you put it that way.....I'd say that was about spot-on. When I see those football players being interviewed....saying THE Ohio State University......I think of that guy from 'In Living Color'. Still, just conversation.
Even though Jeff says that this is the reason, I believe there is another reason.....just look at the thread title. Seems to me he takes offense to someone calling themselves "The" when he used too "whip their asses." Kind of a "The.......pffffffft" attitude. The title of the thread speaks volumes.
You can actually make up anything you want and post it, Dan. I told you exactly why I posted it. It could be a secret codified message about Obama......if you want it to be. BTW...I have NO IDEA what you just said in your last post.....lol.
Actually, reading it again, I don't think this is that hard to understand......Given the thread title. Really, looks like you're offended by the word "The" when there was a time you were better than them.
I like the "THE". It shows the players take great pride in their school. It's THE b/c whether you like it or not, TOSU is a power house in the Big Ten and nation wide. Even an SEC homer like myself can acknowledge that.
THE.....as opposed to which other Ohio State University? How many are there? I'm certainly not offended by anything we're talking about, here. I don't get offended every time I see/hear other things that make me shake my head. I used the reference I did....because when the team I was playing on was kickin' their asses, they went by Ohio State University. I never heard of the "THE" until rather recently. Really.....if you wanna know what I'm thinking, it's more accurate just to ask. Wait......that's not much help, if you've already made up your mind.
I wonder what OSU graduates say at job interviews. "Ok son, tell me about your college experiences...." "Well sir, I graduated from THE Ohio State University" UM
Honestly, the only people I see refer to it like that.....are football alumns. The people I know who went there don't call it that.
