THE Ohio State University? Quick lookup shows the name was changed to "THE OSU" in the late 1800's. What's the significance of the emphasis on the "THE" the last several years? When we played them in baseball (1983), the uni's said "Ohio State" on the front. In fact, I've never seen an OSU uni in any sport that sported the "THE" pre-fix. So....what's up?
I don't want to speak for the Buckeyes, but as a Big Ten fan I've perceived it as something they think is classy, clicky, and different. "We are special". "We are THE OSU". It's what they want to be called because they think is sounds good. Maybe there is more to it. I've never seen it.
No...it IS the actual name of the Univ.. I've just never heard it referred to as such, until recently. So...what's up. What do they THINK it implies (the emphasis on "THE")?
I guess what I am trying to say is the current leadership thinks what I wrote above and they decided to emphasize it. I'd love to hear more about it from someone that actually "knows" . I'm just giving my perception.
Why are we called ""THE" Ohio State University"? In 1986, a new University logo was introduced in the hopes of moving away from the "OSU" symbol, which had been used since 1977. The change from simply "OSU" was said to "reflect the national stature of the institution." University officials wanted the institution to be known as "The Ohio State University," again, since OSU could also mean Oregon State and Oklahoma State University. However, the "The" was actually part of the state legislation when the university was renamed in 1878. The following excerpt is from the Board of Trustee minutes: "...the educational institution heretofore known as the 'Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,' shall be known and designated hereafter as 'The Ohio State University.'" Those who wanted the name change thought the original name was too narrow in scope, and that it was inadequate for the institution that was the only beneficiary of the land grant act. President Edward Orton was insistent that a new name would separate the institution from other colleges in Ohio. Legend also has it that "The" was used to show the other colleges which institution was supposed to be the leader in the state - both in size and in financial support from the legislature
They've been "TOSU" since 1878. Why are we only hearing about it, now? And, why don't their uniforms say TOSU on them? Doesn't bother me. I think it's kinda comical. It's like someone pronouncing a big word, incorrectly.
They have called themselves "The Ohio State University" for as long as I can remember. It is nothing new. You can even watch old NFL footage where players introduce themselves and their college. They all say "the".
You're missing my point. Texas Christian Univ. students don't refer to their univ. as "Christian Univ.". And, their uniforms have TCU on them. If the players/fans wish to emphasize the "THE", and it's THE name of the Univ......why isn't it on their uni's? Like I said, I think it's kinda comical every time I hear a former player say THE OSU (heavy emphasis on THE). It's like he's mispronounced a really big word......thinks he's being intelligent.....and doesn't realize the joke's on him.
How is it a joke on him? That is the name of the University. OSU football uniforms do not say anything except for the student athlete's name and number. No where on them does it reference the name of the University. Basketball reads OHIO STATE... Are you saying they should script out "The Ohio State University" on all of the uniforms? That is just... well... silly. Maybe SC should script out "South Carolina Gamecocks" on all of their uniforms, since that is their name...
No....THAT would be silly. Bottom line is....OSU's (wait) THE OSU's uniforms in most every sport say OSU on them. It's either the name of your univ......or it isn't. These former football players spout the "THE" as if it's some sort of status symbol. They just sound silly (IMO). If the school wants to be known as THE OSU....put it on your uni's. If not, stop with the ridiculousness. Every time I hear those former players saying it like that, I think of this guy...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrjCX8ude04&feature=related
I do not know of any uniform from OSU that says "OSU" or "Ohio State University" on them. They either say Ohio State or nothing at all. (Again of any sport I know of) I really have no idea what your gripe is here. Ohio State is "The Ohio State University" SC is "University of South Carolina". Why doesnt SC put University of South Carolina on all of their uniforms? You know since that is their name and what they want to be known as....
What is so wrong with these guys taking pride of where they came from? They are proud of Ohio State and Ohio State is proud of them. Can't believe you are hating on these guys for being proud of where they came from.
Actually.....they want to be known as "Carolina".....which is what most everyone (including the players) refer to. If you don't find it humorous (THE OSU) stuff.....no biggie. Tell me, though......if they referred to themselves as being from "Ohio State University".....do you think there's anyone who would mistaken their alma mater as another U?
I only checked 5 teams with OSU on their schedule (football). Each team list the opponent for that week as "Ohio State". Not hatin'. Just wondering when the "THE" became so prominent......and why? It just seems as though they're inferring something the way they say it. Like....we're gonna get it mixed up with another school or something.....lol.
WTF, is it hunting season yet????? Are we really this bored that we are worried about "The" instead of the numerous other issues we have in this world?????
